I have tmobile and told them I was going to mexico and they gave me the carrier unlock code for my phone. Then when down there I stopped by a telcel store and bought a prepay sim card. It's like 8 bucks. Then you can add on a data package to it, I got a 15 day max with a few gigs of data for 20 bucks or so. Then I had nice 4G everywhere on the resort. I have wifi hotspot software on the phone too so I could share it out with the laptop and wifes phone and friends devices with ease. Now when I go back I can just top it off online before I go and be all set for the next trip. Much cheaper/better than trying to deal with their wifi.
Can anyone tell me if I can use my iPhone from Telus the way Spyre does, SIM card etc? Telus will give me the code for $35... But they say nothing about SIM cards and the cheaper path!
Is Telus GSM? If so you would want to jailbreak your iphone which I think carrier unlocks it. Or you can get it from Telus: Unlocking your device | Unlock-Device | Phones & Devices | Support | TELUS Mobility If it's an iphone 5 they have the micro-sim, not sure on if those are available on Telcel. Once you put in the sim you will likely need to put in the APN settings: How to text to add the data package SMS to 5050 Price (Pesos/USD) 15 days MEDIO15 (1 GB) $229.00MXN/$17.62 ALTO15D (1.5gb) $299MXN Here are the APN's: INTERNET 3G Entrar a Menu principal/Redes inalam y redes/Redes Moviles/Puntos de acceso/ Oprimir boton de Menu y elegir APN Nuevo: Nombre: Mexico: Telcel: Internet APN: internet.itelcel.com Proxy: <Dejar vacío> Puerto: <Dejar vacío> Nombre de usuario: webgprs Contraseña: webgprs2003 (or webgprs2002) Servidor: <Dejar vacío> MMSC: <Dejar vacío> Proxy de MMS: <Dejar vacío> Puerto MMS: <Dejar vacío> MCC: 334 MNC: 020 Protocolo de autenticación: PAP Tipo de APN: <Dejar vacio> MENSAJES MULTIMEDIA MMS Nombre: Telcel: Mensajes Multimedia APN: mms.itelcel.com Proxy: <Dejar vacío> Puerto: <Dejar vacío> Nombre de usuario: mmsgprs Contraseña: mmsgprs2003 Servidor: <Dejar vacío> MMSC: http://mms.itelcel.com/servlets/mms Proxy de MMS: 148.233.151.240 Puerto MMS: 8080 MCC: 334 MNC: 020 Protocolo de autenticación: PAP Tipo de APN: mms CONFIGURACION WAP GPRS Nombre: Telcel GPRS APN: wap.itelcel.com Proxy: 148.233.151.240 Puerto: 8080 Nombre de usuario: iesgprs Contraseña: iesgprs2002 Servidor: http://upaapps.telcel.com:8582/telcelwap.wml MMSC: <Dejar vacio> Proxy de MMS: <Dejar vacío> Puerto MMS: <Dejar vacío> MCC: 334 MNC: 020 Protocolo de autenticación: <Dejar vacio> Tipo de APN: default When you go in you get a ticket from the front that gives you a number to see a person at a window. You will go to them and tell them what you want, they will have you go to the cashier to buy the sim. When you do that add enough pesos for the data package you want as well and they will give you the credits onto the new sim. You go back to the window and they will put it in and activate it. You or they can then send the txt above to activate the data plan. You will then need to put in the Internet3G APN (really the only one you have to have, if you don't add that then you will just get slow old 2g internet). The store by law can only accept Mexican peso's so you'll want to convert enough for the transaction. Also if you google around, the Telcel store on the Puerto Paradiso mall is closed, it moved down the street (towards Temptation) a couple miles.
Caribbean travel & wifi = major disappointment. will not consider paying for it again. we did Jamaica and BVI sailboat trip with wifi option in 2012, each as bad as the other. i will take bus to Starbucks every couple days to (briefly) stay in touch with work.
If you're just checking on emails and responding to them or need a quick connection, TTR has computers that you can use for $5 or $10 for 30 minutes located at the end of the hallway just to the right of the check in desk in the front lobby. Go down to the end of the hallway and look on your left side, they also use that small space to sell the tours also. The internet speed is not bad in the early morning between 6am and 9am. If you're going to bring your own laptop or ipad you can also sit in the front lobby and use it there, I think that is where the main modem is located as the speed is faster in the lobby versus your room or at the sexy pool
By the sounds of it I think I'll just end up cut off from the internet while I'm there... I'd only be going online to post photos making people back home in the rain jealous, I can just save that for when I'm home
If I want to pay the $5-10 for 30 minutes in the lobby is that just for their computers or to use my iPad? I wan to be ale to keep in contact with my son, maybe FaceTime. Is that going to be doable? Or should I just get an meter national texting plan and text him?
It cost me 500 for 15megs of data on my phone...so yes get a package! I only did that cuz I lost my luggage and needed a website...hind sight is 20/20 Hacking your interwebz @ http://www.facebook.com/al.keyda
