I see some of you guys getting online. Do you guys get Wifi in your hotels? Or do you recommend going to an internet cafe? I heard Starbucks down there has free wifi and doesnt require you to sign up to T-mobile or anything.

Nice, they look pretty updated to me. So the airport is the only free internet huh? Wonder if its worth the bus ride back to the airport just to use the internet :)

I did some more looking around just out of curiosity and for our next trip down there.

It seems that free access is pretty limited. Starbucks has it. The Convention Center seems to have it. And a place called Sanborns ( I think it's in Plaza Flamingo) has it.

Other than that you gots to pay up.

If you take your laptop to the party center area or the malls you could always wander around till you pick up on an open signal. That might be a hassle though.

You have to pay for it at Sanborn's - they give you access to Prodigy, but that's as far as you go without a subscription.

You also have to pay at the Omni. (16 or 18 Km?), but it's free next door at the Royal Mayan and right across the street there's a restraunt/bar/lounge type place that also has 'free' Wifi (except that you'll be expected to buy something, so go there during Happy Hour).

Last year, when we were sitting on the patio of the Sanborns on Kukulcan (11Km, between the Flamingo and La Isla Plazaa), facing the street, we got a weak but useable signal from one of the apartments there. It may still work.

Also, we had free WiFi in the lobby at Sunset Hotel (14 Km?)

I think there may be a Mickey D's near Dos Playas and I have heard (not confirmed) that they have WiFi, so that might be an option.

I think they do, but you have to subscribe to "boingo" or something...
