Checked out Squaremouth and found lots of options. What are the things to look for. Like are there some companies that are more widely accepted in Cancun vs ones that aren't? New at this travel insurance thing but do think that the cheapest is probably not always the best. artytime:
I get a yearly trip cancellation /medical policy from my bank ($200 for 2 million for 2 people) and also have a travel credit card that has some coverage.
Mexico will not take the insurance but you will be Reimbursed for your expenses . If you need to be medevac out the insurance company then takes over. Make sure you have at least 25,000 in medical and 100,000 for extradition. If you have a per existing condition look for a plan that covers that too. The company we used was IHG I believe. It was only about $50 per couple. I don't believe US citizens can get the plan posted above.
my grain of salt I once met a nurse working here in edmonton, and while talking about traveling she mentioned this issue, and she strongly recommended to have at least one credit card ready with a big amount available because it happens that even though you have travel medical insurance , the branches that process the paperwork (in case you call them for an emergency) are closed during weekends and only on monday morning they will start the process meanwhile if you are stuck in a bed in a hospital (who knows where) and you need medical intervention and you have to pay for it, your only choice is your credit card (your insurance will reimburse you later). Yes folks bring a credit card and hopefully it will be in your safe at the hotel the whole trip but if needed it will be more than worth it.
Very true although in this case Mexico was the problem. It all happened. On a sat/sun insurance company stayed in the loop but hospital wanted bill paid before he could leave. Make sure your cc company knows you are in Mexico as their company was closed and card declined. You just never know.
I asked Kaiser if we are covered and they said yes, but if the hospital doesn't accept it then we pay and they will be reimbursed. If it was a small thing fine we could cover it but something huge who has that kind of money just sitting around. Purchased travel insurance today through FrontierMEDEX with a 500,000.00 Medical limit for 57.47 for both of us for the trip. Better safe then sorry would rather waste the 57 dollars and not use it then not have any at all. Debbie
One person told us that if they saw a hospital in Texas called Meximed, they would assume it took Mexican Health Insurance !!! LOL Same here !!! Biggest lesson we learned from our Dec "adventure" was that if you need to fly out of '"Any" airport for a medical emergency, don't make a big deal about how much discomfort you are in !! If the airline ticketing personnel think you are in "too" much pain they won't let you board. (they don't want a medical emergency at 34,000 ft) !!! We were told that by one of the medics at TTR and it was good advice. My wifes hand looked terrible, but we told the supervisor that she was a "natural" redhead and bruises very easily !!! (the truth, well, mosty the truth). Thanks goodness Delta had a lot of flights that day and we were on a plane to Atlanta within 90 minutes. I posted this on Trip advisor and got so many really nasty responses that I just pulled the whole thing.. Lesson learned!!! Most folks on TA really haven't been anywhere !!!
Just spoke to my friends wife she said the held them up for over 30 min in immigration going out on the medevac flight. Only when the flight nurse made a commotion telling them they had to get the man on a monitor did the finally let them go. Kinda scary
