The article I read yesterday said that new limits were placed on dollars in personal bank accounts. Basically no more than $1500 cash deposit dollars per month, per account. So unless the hotel zone workers are doing extraordinarily well in tips, and only have one bank account, I don't think it will affect them too much. Not to mention most of them immediately spend their dollars at stores like walmart. The whole idea of limiting cash dollars seems like it will hurt the small tourist businesses more than anyone, as I'm sure the money launderers have already setup shell corporations to wash the money and will be unaffected....
I know my boyfriend gets less then $1500, and when he tried to deposit it, they said NO WAY!!! Every week he goes back and tries to put some of the $$ that is accumulating and we are unsuccessful. Is the article you read regarding the "Dollars Account"? He does not have one of those, as it's not beneficial. Maybe this is a new policy, as he has not tried this week.
Steve posted a few weeks back that Banamex wasn't taking or exchanging any dollars for anyone without a dollars account.. but I think thats a Banamex problem. I also recall reading that border zones and tourist zones were supposed to have higher limits... the numbers vary slightly by article, but none of them say that dollars can't be exchanged or deposited at all. I can't find the article I read yesterday (it was on this website) but here, here, and here, are some similar ones... (all Spanish). Don't get me wrong I applaud the effort to stop the drug money, but I'm also not stupid enough to think that they don't already have ways around, above, under, and straight thru the new regulations so it will be business as usual for them.
Just got home from Cancun Thurs evening.. talked to a few bartenders in Cancun.. they said they still prefer USD to MXN.. I told them about all this I've been reading, and he basically said, the malls, walmart ect accept USD, so they don't even bother changing the USD to MXN, and also, he said he could use USD at his bank... so.. IDK
We have this quote from one of the articles provided by Life, that says the government regulators have imposed limits on the amount an individual can exchange, deposit, etc., at a bank, to 7,000 dollars/month, less than $200/day, in the tourist zones. The limit in other parts of the country is said to be just 4,000 dollars/month. This doesn't represent much of a burden to tourists, who can exchange their currency at cambios, take money out of their bank accounts back home, using their ATM cards; or, pay in USD (when permitted by the merchant), and use their credit cards.
