Book directly through the hotel (go on a referral if you're not a member), then get your own flights via West Jet when they go on sale. This seems to consistently be the cheapest way, and you get total control over which flights/direct flights.
This is what we did for October 2015 and we will likely do the same for October 2016. We plan on doing west jet + referral week for TTR (provided its open) + cheaptickets for the Desire portion of our trip. Its a little more complicated but I can usually make the dollar stretch and I'm confident that I'm getting what I want with the best prices everywhere. Nikki
I've had problems with Sunwing myself. A few TTR friends coming from Canada as well. None of us were ever offered any compensation though :-( I try my best to avoid their packages now! It's horrible to have your trip cut short because they change your flights 2 weeks prior and you lose a TTR day!

We booked with Westjet back in Sept for our upcoming trip (Feb 14 - 23rd) Flights cost just over $800.00 ea return direct from Calgary.
Booked through cheaptickets. About $3k Cdn for 8 nights including flights. Similar deal available by booking hotel through selloffvacations and flights through westjet directly.
