The eyewall of Wilma is going to hammer Cozumel, Cancun is going to get it hard due to being on the east side of the hurricane. It will be there within a day and it's probably too late to evacuate. Good thing about Cancun, there are several very sturdy hotels that could withstand at Cat 4 hurricane unlike poor Playa Del Carmen that got hammered earlier in the year. I follow this site quite often because we love Cancun. To everyone that's there now, I'm sure I speak for most when I say that we are praying for your safety.
Last 5:00 pm discussions from the National Hurricane Center were that Wilma is gaining strength and could easily become at Cat 5 before hitting the Yucatan. They are saying that if this occurs, it will be catastrophic. Please, anyone there that can leave should do so but those that are staying, need to start planning on where they are going to go. I don't think Cancun will take a direct hit (like Cat 5 Hurricane Gilbert 1988) but being on the east side of the hurricane can cause hurricane force winds that can be as strong as being in the eyewall.
prayer does help I am stopping all activity right now to pray for the safety of all tourists, locals and employees in Cancun and Yucatan... I am very aware of the dangers they are facing and will only wish for the best!
Mom & Dad are there.... I am concerned about Mom & Dad. They are condoing in the Sands. They were told to ride it out. Could anybody there keep me informed of what is going on. This might be the only mode of communication. I hope somebody there has a laptop.....I expect the electricity to go out soon. Good luck,,,,I believe things are going to get real bad.
Cancun Evacuation Our son was at the Royal Islander. Per government mandate, the entire hotel zone was evacuated last night about 7PM MDT. They were taken by bus to a school. They do not know where they are, but it must be somewhere in Cancun. At 4:30AM MDT they just lost power. They are scared and said there is no one there with any information, but they are hearing stories the entire hotel zone is flooded. The school has shutters for windows.
What is wrong with you people? Did you happen to notice that there is a CAT 4 Hurricane...I won't guess your origins but hey...if the shoe fits. Did it ever occur to you that the entire strip and everything in the vicinity will be gone? Including all the people will be homeless and possibly dead? Like wouldn't it be awful if you were like trying to tan and like a Mexican floated by and like blocked the rays.. Hello do you have any regard for human life. You are worried about sunny Cancun take a look sweet heart there's barely any god damn hotels left. Stop focussing on yourself, buy a shake and bake tan and have a little compassion for all the people that live there. There is more to life than vacationing. Take a moment and think of all the people who are trapped there because the Mexican Government didn't move them out, while you are planning for vacation...These people don't have very much and what they do have they are about to loose... Never mind the sun, it will come out another day, stop for a moment and pray for them...it's because of those people that Cancun is even an option for a great vacation... I have a lot of friends there who right now have no electricity, the phone keeps cutting in and out...their little house is flooding, and what little they have is being blown around in the wind... They are and will loose everything that they have. It's a very serious matter. I don't even think there's a hotel worth left staying in right now. Watch the news...all the retaining walls are in the sea...the sea is headed in land. I saddens me to see so many people worried about tans and a shitty vacation. Hell I know you work hard to get away just like everyone else but stop for a moment and think of the people that can't even escape right now, you can always come back...they won't have anything to come back to.
I'd say 99% of the board populace share your concerns about the residents and loved ones who are caught in the middle of this thing. Most of the comments regarding the hurricane in this thread echo that sentiment. However, this is also the CancunCare "Weather" thread, which is usually where local residents post current weather conditions and for tourists to get a truer sense of what to expect weather-wise. When the hurricane passes, this thread will likely be back to the day-to-day weather reports that we've come to anticipate from Steve and Ana.
Well said Michael, well said!! Besides, yes, of course we care! Steve and several others thate we personally KNOW are trapped in cancun during this hurricane! So, it is very personal to us, and yes, we do worry about lives!! Personal materials can be fixed, lives cannot!!
