Btw - a bit less of a drive than Toronto, United has direct flights out of Newark NJ on your dates for $1147.46 USD for two

 

I'll keep an eye out for this too. Right now we are 6 months away - just wondering if after new years prices will go up and up. I agree the Cleveland times are ideal and landing at 5ish would allow us to still drive back in the daylight.

All things being equal, or nearly equal, I would fly out of a U.S. airport, just to avoid having to deal with customs twice each way. We go to Canada fairly often, and crossing the border is generally painless, but it could possibly be more of a hassle if you are coming from Canada via Mexico. Not to mention that the wait times at the border bridges can be pretty long.

If you do decide to do your flight out of Toronto just be sure to use the Ft Erie crossing point rather than Niagara(which is always very slow).

 

We are fortunate in that just across the border from San Diego is Tijuana- the airport there has a couple domestic carriers that are quite a bit cheaper (and nicer in our opinion than some of the US carriers) one of which has recently started international routes into the states- Volaris.
We are able to get Tijuana to Cancun via Mexico city pretty consistently on sale for about $175 pp RT.
Contrasted with our airfares of 6 to 700 pp in previous years to MoBay Jamaica and we are thrilled with what we are paying now. $350 for 2 people RT? No brainer.
