Happened to me at The Atlanta airport. Im a watch collector and had 5 of them stolen. Insurance paid out but I loved those watches. I now put valuables in the carry on..always!

Yes everyone, do not put valuables in check on baggage, to much hassle. I made the mistake about 10 years ago I bought a bottle of Kahlua. I brought bubble wrap and tape. I wrapped and taped. Got home and tape was loose and damn bottle had been opened. Leaked everywhere, and that was a cheap bottle of booze. Don't trust any airport with you're valuables please.

Baggage handlers worldwide are probably one of the lowest paying jobs at airports - lol

Besides if you think zipped bags when locked and even zip tied are secure, think again ...........

It happens ALL THE TIME. There are countless stories of airport workers at all levels stealing things. It probably happens more in Mexico than the US, but it definitely happens in the US.

Shouldn't presume it happened in Mexico. Once you drop your luggage off, until you pick it up again you aren't going to know who has had access. I must have been through the airport in Cancun 50+ times and never had an issue.

Returned from a trip to the Hustler store in LA a couple months back....got the TSA slip in the luggage...nothing missing, but I am sure they got an eyeful!! :icon_redface:

Do people use locks these days? I thought they would just get cut-off anyhow?

You can use the Locks labelled for such use

or put security ties on the zipper tabs,, prevents accidental opening , and at least you know if some one opened .

99.9% sure it was in Cancun. We were there almost two hours before departure and so the bags sat for a long time after we checked them in. Non stop to Orlando and it would hard to believe that some one would break into bags that had yet to clear US Customs, way to dangerous. In addition all 4 were entered, after being loaded in the plane the chance of them all being together in Orlando would be pretty small. They came off the belt at different times.

Interesting side note that we watched the cleaning crew on our flight patted down as they left the plane, something I have never seen in the US.

Best thing to do is buy the TSA Security locks. The TSA screening areas have cameras everywhere for multiple reasons but theft is one of them. If you have one of those sheets of paper saying your bag was inspected, TSA will have the key to unlock your bag and not have to clip the locks, on that sheet of paper it will have the time and station it was inspected at. You can request to have that video emailed to you if you are claiming theft.

Unfortunately this cant be said for the rest of your luggage's trip to the airplane and there are lots of things that could happen along the way like straps on your bag getting caught in conveyors and bags getting ripped open. I have seen them fall from 30 feet in the air while traveling on conveyors and there's the airline workers as well who load and unload the plane.

Like I said get the TSA security locks and if your bag shows up with no locks on it because they were clipped you will at least have some ground to stand on if items are missing from your bag.

FYI- TSA does not want to open your bags and dig through them. When traveling back home most people dont do laundry first and half the bags have dirty smelly cloths in them.
