    Jim, please observe the rules of this forum and stop commenting on the posters, rather than the subject. I believe applying derisive adjectives to other posters is not permitted.

    The article is long, and many will not read it to the end, but Walmart did much more than that: they paid to avoid the normal processes involved in getting legal permissions to open new stores so that they could move rapidly, and occupy the market space ahead of their competitors.

    That others do or might do the same has never been a legal defense. This case is serious, and will be around for years, I expect.

    There was a story in circulation when I lived in Kazakhstan which went like this: McDonald's wanted to start operations there in the 90's, just as they had done in the previous decade in Russia. They were told that a permit for a store would cost one million, each, in extra payments to the President. They decided not to proceed, under those conditions, which would have involved similar violations of U.S. law to those alleged in the Walmart case.

    Interesting contrast, if true.

    I think we'll wrap this one up, it's starting to get personal and that's not what the board is about.
