I have the same issue right now, when I called the consulate here in Cancun they said I would have to do it by post to Mexico City. They didn't mention Merida.
Does anyone have more information, how is it done?
    Thanks
    Jenny

For Canadians, you do it through the consulate office in Plaza Caracol. They send it to Mexico City, they send it to Canada, Canada sends it back to Mexico City, they send it back to you. I did it a couple of years ago and it was painless and fast, three weeks it was in my hands.

My understanding is that you need to go to Merida for a US passport renewal. The US Consul's office in Cancun deals with people in jail and people who die on vacation here (and other things), but they don't do passports.

    renewal

Maybe it changed this year. But in Aug 07 my wife had her done by the US consulate office in Plaza Caracol. This was a renewal and took only 2 weeks. I had my done in Merida cuz I and was over there in 03 and it took over 6 weeks to get it to Cancun.
