With the last weather advisory report, how bad would it be to travel there between Tuesday August 21 for a much needed and long anticipated vacation to cancun? I'd guess the airport will still be closed Tuesday, later in the week maybe fine though. We need to wait and see what happens first.
Another update from "Hurricane Josh" Sun 19 Aug - 05:40 pm CDT What hurricane? Mellow afternoon in Playa Del Carmen. What a completely therapeutic few hours I just had! I needed to get rid of crappy, nervous energy, so I went on a hard 30-minute run into and through downtown Playa Del Carmen. Thanks, hooralph, for recommending it a few days ago! It's completely charming-- a rundown old tropical beach town-- but rundown in a cool, mellow sort of way. The vibe is casual-- lot of men walking down the street without shirts. This is a beach town. Turning off the main promenade in town-- lined with restaurants, gift shops, and bars-- I ran toward the beach and was surprised when I saw it. The water is the most ridiculously bright turquoise-- like on post cards. I'd never seen the Caribbean before, and now I can say those postcards are accurate. (Those colors will change tomorrow.) The run was harsh-- it's hot and humid-- and it was sweet to jump in the water afterward. It just felt amazing-- and warm. I noticed some chicks hanging out on the beach topless-- and some big cumulonimbus clouds building on the E horizon. But I literally almost forgot why I was here-- forgot about the big, nastry cyclone that's coming. sun.gif And I got the impression that no one else was too concerned about it, either. There's not a shread of panic in the air in Playa Del Carmen. People are going about their business-- chilling out on the beach and just hanging. Some shop windows are boarded up, but even the guys doing the boarding are doing it at their own pace, smoking and chatting while they do it. If the hurricane misses, I think I'll stay here through the week-- it's really mellow. But back to the hurricane: I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'll need to drive S for a couple of hours late tomorrow afternoon-- perhaps as far S as Chetumal or beyond. I'm wondering if Dean will be a sequel to Janet 1955.
Kchung I feel yah b/c I am in the same boat as you. We have a group of 8 heading down to Cancun the 22 of August and I really don't wanna cancel. I just wish Dean goes somewhere far out of no man's land. I've been to Cancun about five times now and the weather has always been fabulous so I'm just curious if Dean hits somewhere South, should we still go or will the weather be horrible? I love Cancun but I do not live there so hopefully someone who resides there can advise me better.
From the looks of it, they eye wont hit directly. If we are lucky, we will only see a tropical storm out of all this drama. All I ask is for someone to please update ASAP. I still have plans to leave Wednesday around 10:00 PST. I hope that by 5:00PM CUN time, My plane will be arriving to a sunny or partially clouded CUN. I know most of you might be busy, but I hope it is busy removing the boards from the windows, becuase it was a miss. Please keep us all posted. Good Luck................
I would say by Wednesday afternoon, the airport will be open. The way things are looking the eye is going to end up landing in Belize. I think it's tracking due West rather than the slight north drift they predicted. Mainly steel roof wooden houses down, many on stilts. Yikes. If it ends up going through Chiapas, that'll be a disaster. Much higher population than central Yucatan.
The storm keeps moving down away from Cancun. Yes Cancun will get strong winds and rain, But looks as it will not be hit.. Be strong guys
Hurricane Dean Based upon the current track, the biggest concern for Cancun will be destruction to the fragile beaches, already severely weakened by Wilma. The southern Yucatan and Belize will be another story. Damage will be catastrophic with loss of life likely.
I’m due to have a phone interview for the TV regarding preparations in Cancun in ten minutes time (8am CST). If you’re in the Houston, Texas area then please listen out for me on TV at Houston KRIV-FOX 26.
Well, that seemed to go OK. No tricky questions, although the anchor said at the end I didn't seem too worried and maybe they ought to call me again afterwards!
