Good morning everyone, I'm new to here. I'm actually supposed to stay at the Cancun Hilton between August 21 - August 28, is it still worth it to come? Many thanks
If you're sceduled to go on Monday the 21st, I highly doubt you'll get there. Please don't take this wrong but I really don't think they want you to come. They are already advising travel agents not tosend more tourists in.
My flight is supposed to arrive in Cancun on Tuesday August 21 @ 12:40pm. So it is suggested not to go at all? By the looks of the chart Dean is hitting just south of Cancun, would I be able to make the most of my vacation if I still go?
Even if Dean hits south of cancun in some way, it is going to be effective. There's a good chance the airport won't even be open at that point on Tuesday. I'm not going to make that call for you but I wouldn't plan on going to any area on the day that they're likely to get whatever it is they are going to get from the storm. Nobody knows 100% what the impact is going to beyet. And like I said, it may not be your choice...the airport may not be open. The govt of Quintana Roo is telling people NOT to come in the next few days. I think that should tell you something. Here's their advisory: Official Bulletin of the State of Quintana Roo 4:30pm The Governor of Quintana Roo just addressed to the state a few minutes ago, the hurricane alert remains as YELLOW ALERT (permanent watch for possible impact from 48 to 72 hours). 1.- Schools will be closed on Monday for the whole north area of the state 2.- The airports of Cancun and Cozumel will continue operating until Monday as long as the weather allows the aerial operation. 3.- The full evacuation of the Islands of Contoy, Holbox and the keys of the central part of the state will be completed today. Cozumel is excluded of this evacuation since that is a big island that has its own system of protection, in the case of Isla Mujeres there will be meetings this afternoon to take the decision about the actions to take. 4.- Travel agencies must NOT bring to any tourist to the region 5.- Flights departing Cancun and Cozumel from today and until Monday are reported as full 6.- Empty ferry planes will be arriving to the Cancun airport this weekend to take the most number of tourist out of this area 7.- Travelers staying in Cancun at this moment must contact their airline to book a return trip immediately 8.- Tourists that can not get a plane seat to return home will be protected by the government in the authorized shelters 9.- More that 300 agents from the Federal Police will be arriving tomorrow to enforce the security in the area 10.- Humanitarian help of the Mexican Red Cross are being prepared in Mexico City in case of impact 11.- 100%of the shelters are ready to receive the evacuates 12.- Tourists staying at the hotels will not be evacuated at this moment until the hoteliers receive the official instruction from the government to do so
If the estimated track turns out to be accurate, we'll be 400km North of the eye landfall, and will probably get rain and 50km/h winds. I'll take it. By the next update Cancun should be outside the track error cone and the likelihood of a direct hit here will be far less.
This most recent update should answer any questions about going or not going "The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the first hurricane of the Atlantic season was projected to reach the most dangerous hurricane classification, Category 5, with winds of 160 mph before crashing into the Mexican coastline near Cancun on Monday night or Tuesday. The Mexican mainland or Texas could be hit later." 160 mph winds!!! Only one who goes into that is a hurricane chaser or someone who has a death wish. Stay home, come back later when things are normal (they will be relatively soon thereafter). It's a vacation for you and life and death for them.
Hey - I understand what youre saying but people are gonna be anxious about a long awaited trip to wonderful Cancun. It IS life or death for the people who live there and we're all aware of that. I am thinking of them constantly and the people of Jamaica right now. We're supposed to be coming to Cancun from the UK in just over 3 weeks and it IS a long awaited vaca for us BUT we know that theres always a risk if you book in hurricane season - so we're watching and waiting with baited breath - mainly for the people who live out there but I'd be lying if I said I wouldnt be gutted it I couldnt come on my vacation - but I know my worries are small fries compared to those who have to live through it. IF Dean stays on its currrent course Cancun wont end up getting a direct hit - it will experience tropical storm force winds which is bad but NOT as bad as it could be. My thoughts are with you all out there - stay safe xxxxx
Let me just let it out. I am concerned of the people who live in the Yucatan and with this hurricane shifting south, it would only make things worst for Mexico in general. Why, because the people down south, (not all), live in poverty, and their homes would never withstand these types of natural disasters. However, I would be lying if I said my trip does not matter. I have been waiting for this day for a very long time. I have had the opportunity to go to Cabo, PVR, Acapulco etc, in the last day or two, But I really want to go to CUN. My prayers are with all the locals. And If I am correct, one of the purposes of this site is to keep all us tourist informed. Hope things work out for all of us..... SVT..........
