I believe part of the problem is that upper management only partially understands the unique asset they have with TTR; namely, a large group of like minded people who keep coming back. Within this online community, there's an overall understanding of what is and is not appropriate. Most guests figure this out and those that want that unique experience keep coming back; the rest write up how terrible TTR is on Trip Advisor! Every so often, something generates a large volume of complaints (this time it was the 42 group that was out of control). Management overreacts and tells security and other staff to "crack down". Most of the security guys are pretty young, and obviously Mexican, a more conservative culture than what we bring to the resort. So these young security guys don't have the judgement to fully comprehend what's inappropriate within the TTR scheme of things. Someone like Chinos understands when things do start to get out of hand and has a lot of common sense in dealing with various issues. That he was gone a week when all this crackdown was happening was unfortunate. It's a good rule to not argue with the security guys; they're only doing as instructed and have no authority to do otherwise. Best to lodge complaints with managers; and always in a polite, respectful way. And with written complaints (comment cards), be specific. I might guess that some of the complaints about the "group of 42" mentioned "out of control guys". It takes a certain level of understanding on the part of management to understand that what is or is not "out of control" behaviour really depends on the context and the group involved. I'm sure things will gradually get back to normal; it's best not to try to push the limits too far, but I fully anticipate the fun we've all grown to love will be there in May.
