As someone from Nebraska, I can say the violence has reached epic levels here. I would advise people to stay far away from San Diego because we Cornhuskers will go to ANY length to make your trip HELL!! We'll husk your a$$ after the Winter we've had. LOL

Sorry to turn this back serious again, but:

They aren't! The original poster said:
I follow the local and national news and this is simply not true, not only for Cancun but the whole of Mexico. If you disagree then please post a link to a news story where this happened - if it happened there would be a news story about it for sure.

My gripe is that this question comes up every week or two and its always someone who heard "something from someone" it's never backed up by facts and was probably passed on by someone who has never even left their State let alone their Country.

The problem is that people read this forum to get facts and some, when they see threads like this, take it as truth and then go tell others that they read on a Cancun forum that American tourists are being beheaded when it simply is not true.

So, I'm afraid, I'm making no apologies for refuting hearsay that is simply false.

We've been to Mexico 3 times now and have always felt perfectly safe, the occasional loco taxi driver excepted! :)
There's bits of Bolton (the town I work in) that I wouldn't want to visit after dark, but we've never had any hesitation about using the buses in Cancun in the evening.
Having said all that, the first time we went to the market in downtown, I was offered a machine gun - quite a good price too, if I remember correctly!

Steve - recently my BF was told by a travel agent in NY state (where he lives) that they are advising people NOT to go to Mexico because of all the violence against tourists. I told him that was such an irresponsible comment to make, especially coming from a travel agent. I reminded him that the crime rate in cities all over the US and in Canada too (where I live) is likely much higher than it is in Cancun. I've never had any problems whatsoever in Mexico during the 8 times I've been, and let me tell you, I've taken some chances as a female travelling solo going places by myself at night at times.

You're right, people love to tell negative stories just to sensationalize it...lets pass on the good stories instead.

If in doubt, stay close to the resort or go out with a group, but its not really necessary.

    Not too worried

about the violence down in Mexico. Cancun is safer than border towns where violence is insane.

I've been trying to lose 20 lbs for years, but then I went to Mexico and got beheaded. Took care of the problem!

(all seriousness, I've traveled all over Mexico for business. Unless you're in Juarez, Tijuana, or Matamoros, AND doing something that the drug cartels would deem threatening to their business, your chances of this are slim and none.)

Even without common sense (walking back from the hotel zone in no proper state of mind) I was safe as could be.
