I lived in Florida for many years (Tampa and Bradenton) and still consider it my second home. I honestly don't know why people looking for a beach vacation would go to the Atlantic Coast of Florida... The sand is brown/gold, lots of seaweed and pieces of shell, the water is much colder, and there's no sunset. Sure, half of New York is in West Palm and Fort Lauderdale, but that's about it. South beach is fun once in a while, of course. If someone wants a memorable beach experience, travel to Sarasota, Florida (West coast, south of Tampa) and visit Siesta Key Village, and of course Siesta Key Beach. The sand is pure quartz, which means that it is like baby powder. It's so white that it never gets hot, just reflects the sun. The Daiquiri Deck is a fine place to have all kinds of frozen drinks, and watch the people go by. I'm disappointed that Azure Tides, my favorite tiki bar located on St. Armands Key, has closed up shop.
The plan for this year does include a day at the Animal Kingdom. Thanks to you guys for the can't-miss! Dennis, I agree with your assessment of the Atlantic coast of Florida. It was worth checking out, if nothing more I could tell my Grandma "I dipped my toes in the Atlantic." Of course when I told her I was there that was her first question! LOL Seriously, the Atlantic I saw has NOTHING on the Gulf (in Florida) or Cancun!!!! I have read and heard a LOT about Siesta Key and it all says exactly what you said about it! Maybe while I'm there next month I can check that out for myself because I really do want to go there.
