Rivergirl, Any update on whether its getting any busier?? Just dont want to go at the end of the june and for it to be a ghost town!! Thanks!
Rivergirl I am not arguaing but as info July is the second busiest month for Cancun torism next to March and is a very close 2nd. For some reason there is a perception the summer months are slow for Cancun tourism and this is not the case. 2008 stats showing the top 3 months Month - # visitors Mar - 207,356 Jul - 205,297 Jun - 194,930
BVG_Steve - Where'd you get that data? It doesn't match the data from INM's incoming international passenger arrivals to Cancun. I'm gathering some data which I'll post as soon as it's complete. But I can tell you that Cancun airport sees upwards of 400,000 international arriving pax during each of the busy months. In July 2008 INM registered just over 372,000 total international arrivals for the month. December, January, February, March and April were all higher than that. From the data I see so far July is maybe the 5th busiest month here in terms of incoming international passengers. I will post more when I have the data straight.
Not wanting to enter into an argument, but in my experience Jan, Feb, March are by far the busiest months when I look at my website stats that go back 5 years. Slows down around Mid April, picks up a little around end of June, dies off in Sept and by comparison it's dead until mid December. Take a look at hotel rates they match this pattern perfectly. Of course my website stats dont reflect everything because this site's demographic is English speaking, and therefore doesnt reflect the national Mexican tourist season in the summer.
I've got some fresh data for May now. In May 2008 (last year) Cancun welcomed 357,087 international passengers through the airport. In May 2009 the number was 1/3 of that or 118,987 passengers. Thank you swine flu. For perspective, in September 2008 (the lowest month by passenger volume) Cancun Airport welcomed 195,022 international arriving passengers. Weekend days at the airport are always busier than weekdays. In May of 2008 the total weekend international arrivals were this: 1st weekend: 30,949 2nd weekend: 30,500 3rd weekend: 31,111 4th weekend: 32,219 In May 2009 the weekend totals were: 1st weekend: 6,038 2nd weekend: 7,335 3rd weekend: 10,635 4th weekend: 11,442 So even though the number of passengers in May increased substantially by the 4th weekend it still didn't reach 50% of what it was on a normal weekend in May of last year. I'm working on a larger data set that will include incoming passenger data by month. Will post that when it's done.
It turns out I was given bad data for my first post in this thread. That weekend of the 9th & 10th of May we got 7,335 incoming international arrivals, not 2000. So it was never as bad as I thought it was at first.
