The environmental tax collected by the resort is approximately $4 per night. The VisiTax (if you choose to pay it) is roughly $20 per person per trip.

The visitax is poorly enforced. We have only been asked 2x for proof in our numerous visits and plenty of people just ignore them when asked

We have never encountered visitax, never been asked, and wouldn't know how to even pay it if we wanted to.

They walk around with vests. Usually at baggage claim. Easy to avoid.

Just had the privilege last week to meet one of those brown-vested VisiTax folks. After wife & I checked luggage, upon departure, we saw about 8 brown-vested VisiTax collectors standing around. As we walked by, one of them stopped us and asked us if we paid the VisiTax. We thought it was a scam so kept walking but senorita told us she was with the government and we needed to show her a QRL code or a receipt that we paid the taxes. Never heard of them before. She then scanned our passports with her tablet to see if we had already paid. They will only accept payments by credit card. Cost was $1050 MXN total ($54.18 USD) or $27.09 USD each. Nobody else asked us for a receipt upon arrival or departure. We were delayed at least 15 minutes before entering security. During this time only saw the "brown-vests" stop 3 other people.

Landed yesterday and saw two of them after Immigration but before the customs folks, they were not real aggressive and only stopped people that were right next to them. The customs people were pretty busy checking bags. We’re got caught with one extra can of Copenhagen snuff (supposedly 5 is the limit?) and had to pay a $1.86 duty…would have rather paid $20 then get delayed for 45 minutes. The tourism tax people do seem like a scam we have also seen them by the escalators before security when leaving, sounds like you met those ones.
