The Wal Mart in Cancun is not cheap. We paid $30 for a $15 box fan. We bought the last two 4 packs of red bull. The driver took us to the liquor store in front of Wal Mart and we bought 2 bottles of Vodka and a bottle of wine.
We've been to Wal-Mart a few times. We found the prices very reasonable/in line with US pricing on most items. Sunscreen was comparably priced to US and not 4x markup as seen close to the resort. A taxi is a waste. It's like 20 pesos/person each way by bus. The bus stops every 10 min or so right in front of the resort.
We have never done it yet, but are considering it this October. I pretty much stick to beer an wine and after a few days the beer at the resort can get old. I also heard they have some halfway decent wine as well.
Last time in Feb I checked Erin in, sat her by the pool and spent a whole buck for bus ride to wally world to get some decent Vodka for the room. Agree not cheap. Ended up getting couple bottles of price inflated Absolut, there was Stoli which is my normal straight vodka on ice choice but was steep. Thanks, will look for the liquor store Sat midday when we land! :daveandmo:
This year we've decided that we're gonna go and stock up on cases of water for our room. I feel like they ever give us enough and it's so expensive at the gift shop
We just ask housekeeping for extra water and they are quite happy to gives 4-5 bottles a day...mind you we do leave a$5/day tip. We bring our own coffee for the mornings and kettle / tea for evenings.
I'll be quite honest, I spent $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on my daughters wedding in Playa Del Carmen and what did my South Georgia kin folks rant and rave the most about. The GREAT water and beach, Great weather, NOPE. It was Sams Club and Walmart !!! They did put up a pretty negative comment about Fifth Avenue in the Church Bulletin!!
We just do carry on, so we always need to stop at Walmart to pick up our shampoo, soap and everything else that we may need. The past few years, we gave the guys at US Transfer an extra $20 to stop on the way to the hotel so we have everything we need when we get there.
Another option, if you are just picking a few things up like toiletries, a few nibbles or a bottle or two is to ask the driver to stop at one of the several convenience stores en route to the hotel such as Exxtra or Oxxo. They'll do this for no extra charge as long as you are in and out fairly quickly, dont forget to be nice and buy the driver a soft drink though.
Our biggest concern was wanting to make sure we had plenty of bottled water for the room. If a nice tip to housekeeping will make that happen, we'll be good! The Mrs. -- Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
