Thanks all for all the help have $100 in ones and plenty of $5's. We leave tomrrow so let the fun begin!
Where did you get $1 bills from? Been searching for ages to try and find somewhere that will guarantee $1s. We only took pesos last trip, and had to order them in because the currency exchange don't keep pesos in stock. They only had big bills (500 and 1000 peso notes) so we spent a lot of our holiday trying to find places that would exchange them for smaller notes! If I could get hold of $1 bills that would save us the trouble.
The great debate for us lot that come from the UK - do you take pesos or dollars? All the travel agents advise you against taking dollars saying that nowhere in Mexico will accept them, but that's BS. All the tours and bar prices are quoted in dollars, and the staff certainly appreciate either dollars or pesos. Looking at UK currency exchange today, £1 will get you either $19.38 pesos or $1.52 dollars. Last time I checked $1 dollar was worth around 14 pesos. If this is still the case would mean exchanging £1 into dollars would be worth equivalent of around 21 pesos in Mexico. Granted not much difference, but it all adds up when you're tipping for everything. For example, if I exchanged £300 for pesos I'd get $5814 pesos. If I exchanged £300 for dollars I'd get $456 dollars (which at 14 peso to 1 dollar would be equivalent to $6384 pesos). That's $40 dollars (or £29) more that would go to TTR staff, not Bureau de Change.
When I go I try to make sure to tip the "forgotten staff." I tipped the guy that was out raking the beach seaweed one day and he was floored - didn't know what to do! The bartenders and maids get plenty but the poor gardeners and the like don't so I try to help them out. They do keep the place nice!
Just checking out old threads...how much do I need to tip Stacia to pose with MY towel animals in MY room?! Sounds like a great photos collection you have John!! :clappyinghappy:
Bring lots of 1s (50-100) and some 5s, 10s and 20s Just tip accordingly and generously. You don't need to tip necessarily every time you order a drink. Just do it in moderation when it comes to the sexy pool bar and the Paty-O bar as that's where you would most likely be tipping most. Don't forget to tip the maids too. I also got them a gift at the beginning for the maid, a very nice silver pen. and by the end of the trip as i checked out I gave her another basketful of goodies. I wanted to make sure she knew I appreciated her and since they get paid so little. Also, if you're gonna order a burger late at night at you probably will at the Paty-O bar kitchen. Please, please remember to tip the cooks that prepare your burgers. While I was there all week last week, they seem to be the ones that don't get tipped and they work late at night and don't even see their family before they go to bed with little to bring home. And don't forget to tip the Entertainment staff as well. They work so hard to provide entertainment to make our time their a blast. without them our time at TTR would no where be near as fun. Lastly don't forget to tip the buffet restaurant after each meal. Most people I've noticed don't seemed to tip for some reason. So I would bring about $200-$300 in tipping money. I hope this helps -Chow
Yeah, we had the best room in all of Waikiki Beach. Honeymoon Jacuzzi Suite on the top floor of the Outrigger Waikiki, the view of Diamondhead was unbelievable, not to mention the sunsets!
