excellent thx. a related question. I generally tip a US dollar a drink at other resorts in the DR cuba etc. Is there any reason to change that at TTR. And, do Canadian banks normally carry pesos for exchange

Some do some don't. td here does at most branches but the amounts vary. I got 3300 at one and my wife 5500 at another. Usually they don't carry a whole lot but enough for a typical week

In any decent sized city if you give them more than a couple of days notice they can have whatever you need for your trip ready for you :)

    We use pesos.
    A) cheaper exchange than US dollars right now for us Canadians
    B) the peso notes are plastic, hence waterproof. We get a stack of $20 peso notes. You can keep them in your swim trunks and they don't get all soggy plus the are worth roughly $1.28 US

My last trip, I exchanged us for pesos. That was just mainly for tipping. I always try to make sure I bring enough in cash to tip 20 US every day "converted to pesos once I get there" most of the great TTR staff are happy with either.. I actually was so impressed with the bartender at patios last October that I gave him one of my Rolex watches :) he liked it! I love TTR! It is like a second home where I can be who I want to be and make great friends. :)

For us Brits Peso's are a better exchange rate at nearly 24 to the pound and been increasing each month where as the US dollar is so low at 1.50 to the pound

I have asked the staff .. They prefer US currency not pesos I repeat no pesos US dollars only, But if your Canadian it will be better for you to use pesos
