Pretty darn amazing that those fans are turning out in such numbers, in spite of the recession. I was watching a NYC-BOSTON game last night, and it looked pretty well sold out, too. I've never seen a breakdown of revenues for pro teams, but I guess they still make a lot off ticket sales, and everything that goes with having "fans in the stands".
Where is the stadium located? Is it on the bus route? Taking my daughter and 2 friends on the Senior Project trip. They need to experience Mexican culture. The baseball game would be a fun experience!
It is an easy, safe walk on the R-2 bus. Night games start at 7pm. Simplest way is to get off at the Walmart stop downtown. You will be on Coba, but you first need to get over to Walmart/Sams. Follow the crowd or just look across the street, then one more block and see a couple of tall antennas. Go in that direction and you will see Sam's Club and Walmart. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cancun+mexico&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=26.177529,70.488281&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Canc%C3%BAn,+Quintana+Roo,+Mexico&ll=21.154017,-86.830702&spn=0.007504,0.017209&t=h&z=16 Manuever this map till you see the football and baseball stadiums in the lower left corner. You can see that the baseball stadium is named Estadio Beto Avila. Picture an imaginary line through the middle of the football and baseball stadiums and you will see the two large white buildings. On the left is Walmart and Sam's is indicated. Walk toward the curve in the street named Palenque. You can cut through to the stadium from the approx center of that curve to the approx center of the curve on Mayapan. It's about 100 yards when you get to Mayapan. This walk may seem strange but many taxis drop off their passengers there whose destiination is the ball game. Avoids the traffic on Mayapan. The trickiest thing is getting back to the bus stop to the HZ but it is not that tricky. It is easy to spot, only it is on Xcaret, next to Walmart. It will probably be the R-2 bus but any that say Hoteles or Zona Hotelera will get you back. I like low numbered seats in Sec 4, like 1-10 or so, or high numbered seats in Sec 3, like 25 or higher. 3 is a little left of behind home plate and 4 is behind the Tigres' dugout on the 3rd base side. Suggest also rows C, D or E as A and B get some vendors and customers standing around and could block your view. Section is Seccion Row is Fila Seat is Asiento Enjoy. Post when you are going to a game and some people from this Board may arrange a meet with youl http://www.tigresqr.com/2009/ Don't let 2009 fool you. This is the right calendar.
Thanks TJ! I've been to the Walmart many times so I'm very familiar with the R2. Just wasn't sure how to get to the stadium. Thanks for the great instructions! I think we will give it a try! It will be interesting for the girls to see the difference of cultures - even at the ballpark.
Presumably, though I never asked, CHORIPAN is a combination of Chorizo and Pan, the sausage and the bread. Trina used the word Bolillo, which is a bread roll, that it shaped more or less like a little football. At Choripan at the ball park, they put two chorizos in my sandwich last weekend. I know all the locals will already know this but the following paragraph is for the benefit of the occasional tourist visiting this board: If you go to Soriana, Walmart, Chedraui, etc. and go wandering in the bakery section, you often see Bolillos on a tray/platter with a mystery meat, lettuce, tomato and cheese for like $6, about $.50 US. At these bakeries you grab a round aluminum tray and some tongs, fill up the tray, walk over to a masked lady, who will bag everything for you, and put a price ticket on it for checkout. Hint: When I find an item I want, I stand back, look at how and where they are displayed, and try to choose a piece less likely to have been touched, sneezed on, or whatever, by either an adult or a child. Being tall really helps so often I take one from the back of the top row. I have been known to root around a bit lower, but NEVER do I take an item close to the front of the rack. Simply playing the odds I guess. I often grab a bolillo or two as a snack and eat it or them on the way home or to wherever I am heading.
TJ, I never miss the pan section of the Commercial Mexicana store on Tulum ave. The bread and pasteries are killer. You cant get good bread and pasteries (or tropical fruit) like that here in MN. Not sure if it is still there but there was a bakery just past that Commercial Mexicana walking away from Tulum accross from the little make out park behind Commercial Mexicana and in the same strech of stores that Ty-Coz is in that has the best bakery products. Have you ever been there?
Gonzo, I sure know the area but cannot place the bakery. I need to check it out though. I know I have never been there but went to two bakeries today to get some stuff to take to dinner at a friend's house tonight. La Pastelteria was not good enough today for the novia. I waited in the car. We then went to the one in Plaza Las Avenidas, sort of behind the Burger King. I had two things picked out right off the bat and am eating one of them now. Dessert for my late breakfast. Thanks for mentioning that other one near Ty-Coz.
There's a full week of games in town, starting on the 24, including two "All Star" games; this week Tigres have got games on Tues-Thurs, against Campeche. (Can't make it Thurs, T.J., working late that day. University academic year is coming to an end, so it's "all hands on deck"! But, that next week, well, might be able to get in several!) Let us know, sickofsnow, if you need any help with tickets: that can get a little "hit or miss" I'm afraid, just because there isn't that much demand, right now, and the ticket sellers just "wander away" during the hours they're supposed to be in the booth! You have to track them down, at times, it seems. (I've had to do it twice, recently.) ______________________
Back in town The Tigres of Quintana Roo baseball team are back in town this week, where they'll be playing, starting tomorrow, and continuing through Sunday, 22-27 June. They've had a rough time on the road and are now five games out of first place in the Hidalgo Zona, so come on out and support the team, this week. This will also be your chance to see American, Bobby Cramer, pitch, if you haven't already. http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/living-cancun-riviera-maya/16463-pitcher-bobby-cramer.html For visitors to Cancun, this is a chance to enjoy a nice family night out, and see one of the ways Mexicans like to spend their leisure time. Some of the best tickets in the house cost just 80 pesos, each. The games tend to start at 8 PM, weekdays, 7 PM on Saturdays, and 6 PM on Sundays: for exact game times, in case of any changes, go to their website and click on "proximo juego", at the right top. TIGRES DE QUINTANA ROO :: SITIO OFICIAL :: TEMPORADA 2010 For the taxi drivers, "al estadio de los Tigres", will get you there, as they all know where it is, and it's right in the center of the most developed parts of Cancun, very near Walmart.
