Ah... I've been pondering that for a while now. LOL Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing, Testing And a signature...lol
Engineer? [ame="http://youtube.com/watch?v=KaHm1ecBCgw"]YouTube - What makes an engineer and/or ham radio amateur?? :anon:
Oh man, that's funny! As a sales manager I report to the VP who is an engineer. Smart guy...but somewhat lacking in people skills...lol.
Come on George. Give me the short version. It seems ridiculous to me that something as critical as clear communications between a pilot and the tower could be so poorly achieved. Even helicopter traffic reports sound bad.
Well there is a few reasons, one is that they use amplitude modulation (AM) rather than FM which has a poorer sound quality. The reason for this is so that if two pilots transmit at the same time the ATC can hear there is two people talking, with fm only the strongest one would be heard. They also use a lot of audio compresson Which raises the average voice level to be heard better over static etc. That is why they all sound the same. I think. George
Ah...very interesting. Thanks! (Footnote: There were a couple of AM stations where I used to live that experimented in broadcasting in stereo, years ago. The sound was actually quite good. Of course you needed a receiver that could reproduce the stereo signal)
