I looked up high pressure tans, and they use almost exclusively UVA rays and very minimal UVB, which somehow has the effect of making you exfoliate less quickly, so the tan lasts longer. And it's hard to get burned in a high pressure tanner. And you tan faster, as Glenn's post says. Kinda $$$ though.
To understand why you should alternate tanning equipment, you need to understand the difference between high & low pressure. High Pressure bulbs contain a very high percentage of UVA (roughly 99%). UVA penetrates deeper into your skin for a long-lasting tan! Low Pressure bulbs contain a slightly larger percentage of UVB (between 3-8%). UVB only penetrates the surface layer of your skin, giving you immediate results! UVB stimulates melanin production in the skin, while UVA browns the melanin. Thus, the reason you should alternate between high & low pressure tanning equipment, is to get both an immediate & long lasting tan! Best of both worlds! Using the same equipment every time you tan will eventually stunt the progress of your tan. ** Important to note: UVB is ideal for creating a base tan. Once your base tan is achieved, you can move on to beds with more UVA that will help brown the melanin in your skin!
This is all far too complicated for me. The place down the street from me has a 1/2 price special between 10 am and 11 am every weekday for whatever beds they happen to have, so I going to go there three times the week before Cancun and whatever cheap tan I get in that time is what I am showing up with at the Sexy Pool. I'll spend the money I save on shoes.
