For me the question of how they got to .25 alcohol (or higher depending on when the test was administered) is an important one. Can 5 shots and a mixed drink get you there? I think the brother admitted they had 5 shots. Or, like mentioned above, was the alcohol more potent than normal shots because the resort took a short cut and purchased bootlegged alcohol. If the resort took a short cut then damn right they should be held accountable. I read somewhere (not confident it was true) that the lawyers were in there not after taking bottles to test the alcohol. If it isn't the proof on the bottle then there is your grounds to pursue this thing further.

Depends on their weight. My understanding is that both were not large. IIRC the young lady only weighed around 120 pounds. The general rule of thumb is at that weight, 2 mixed drinks or shots could make her legally intoxicated. 6 in a short period of time and she would be hammered. And the strength of each shot could vary widely depending on the accuracy of the pour. So the shots could have been stronger as a result of an over pour.

I know the laws in Mexico are very different, but in Arizona the resort would be in deep trouble for over serving. That's probably why there are no all inclusive in the states.

We had this conversation when we read it recently and honestly, I'm not sure. We had an over-night flight and stayed up and partied all day. Had a great recollection of some events at the quiet pool bar but got filled in the next day (from two separate couples who didnt know each other) about some pretty obvious stuff that neither one of us could remember. It is unusual for either one of us to have a pretty large time that was blacked out like that. Cant blame the resort as it could easily have been us but it was very strange. Then again, I guess I will just not need as much alcohol if its tainted!! 12 Days!!

I've watched them pour, and they will over serve you, if you demand it. They'll take every opportunity to water down your drink with extra ice, but you're an adult. If you want to destroy yourself, they'll let you.

I have 2 days at TTR that are foggy/blank. One night I tried half shots of ALL the tequilas at Embarcardero, and the other when I had a large portion of a fifth of Jäger with some Brits while drinking at Paty O's. I've seen other people over-served several times, and I trust TTR staff to get me back to my room to sleep it off, or at least hospitalize me to avoid negative press about a guest dying on the property.

I'm usually on beer during the day so I don't have to mess with this problem while the sun's up. Stacia does however. Being teensy, she's just not capable of drinking all day and making it out all night - unless some controls are put into play, so she deliberately asks for a week drink to start, and one of the guys at the Premier deck bar (just our habit, we know all those guys better than the swim-up or other tenders) will make her first couple with maybe a 3rd of the normal pour-serving. I know she'll still "get there," since someone is ALWAYS going to come by in the Sexy Pool with an armload of shots for pretty girls and the guys hanging around, or someone will ALWAYS suggest that the group make a massive move for a rounds of shots, so the forbearance on the front endpays off on the back end. Sometimes literally, and yes, that is a double entendre.

Mexican authorities seized 10,000 gallons of illegal alcohol this week after discovering an illicit manufacturer was supplying tourist attractions in Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Government officials took the potentially tainted alcohol, citing the company's "bad manufacturing practices," according to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which opened an investigation into how travelers to upscale resorts near Cancun and Playa del Carmen have been blacking out after drinking small amounts of alcohol last month. Regulators, who did not release the company's name, raided 31 resorts, nightclubs and restaurants in the area.

Officials shut down operations at two bars, including one at the resort Iberostar Paraiso Maya, located in the complex where a 20-year-old Wisconsin woman was found unconscious in a pool in January. Abbey Conner, who was on vacation with her family at the time, drowned after drinking with her brother at the resort’s lobby bar. She was declared brain dead after being flown back to Florida.
