Isla is the easiest place to live. I have lived there on and off my whole life and finally settled full time on the mainland. Luckily my family has a house on the island, so I get to go back every weekend (o:

The place that you posted looks ideal but if you want to spend less money, you can probably find a room mate situation pretty quickly once you get there. As for work, the island has a reputation for hiring foreigners without work visas for short term tip only type jobs. I recommend that you make friends with the people at Pocna and OM and start asking around. Also, if you go to Cafe Manana, you can find postings for Spanish tutors that are really cheap compared to private lessons in Cancun. They also have an awesome book exchange there.

Parking is not a problem in Isla. Although for 11 pesos, it is usually easier to take a taxi. Here is a taxi tip: If you take a cab from the taxi stand downtown it is 20 pesos during the day to anywhere except Punta Sur and Sac Bajo. If you are hailing a cab, hold up your fingers for how many people are riding (1 if it's just you, 2 if you're with a friend, etc.) even if the cab has people in it. If you are willing to share cabs, it is 11 pesos to anywhere except PS and SB during the day.

    Good luck!

Thanks. I'm OK with spending up to $500. I would prefer to be in the downtown area. I don't forsee needing to do much that involves needing to take a cab or drive around. Mostly I want to hang out, go to the beach, maybe do some stuff on the computer, so internet is nearby. I don't need to work, but I was thinking of volunteering a bit. Mostly I just want to speak spanish and veg out. :huepfen021:

Either way, I would rather shoot myself than have a roommate. Of course, you are catching me on a day where I'm on spring break and my MF roommate woke me up at 6:30. Oddly - he is asleep now. bastard.

Well, there are usually volunteer opportunities at The Little Yellow School House and The English School in La Gloria.

    Good Luck!

I have two apartment son Isla and ample on street parking and a dog. Check out www. zinahouse.com
I'd be willing to cut a nice deal for the downstairs apartment without AC and you take care of the laundry. NO SMOKING because the linen closet for all is in that unit.
