Many travelers know that Spirit recently began charging $10 for a 2nd checked bag and $100 for a 3rd one. Well now, starting June 20, you will have to pay to check any luggage. $10 per checked bag if you do it at the airport but "only" $5 if arranged in advance online. Spirit's version of first class, Spirit Plus, will change to Premium Economy class of service, whatever that is, but will be called the creatively named "Big Front Seat." No more free booze for those paying double or more than those in Coach. Spirit has had a profitable system for quite a while but must not have heard the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" old saying.
They must have a new CEO that feels the desperate need to justify his astronomical wages. That happened to a company I used to work for. The new president decided to fix everything we were doing wrong and maximize the profits. Needless to say, we went belly up withing 6 months.
What, I didnt know that! We always fly SpiritPlus, mostly for the booze. We are going to Cancun next Saturday and have Spirit Plus. I hardly ever check my bags on my way up, but almost always coming back. What a PIA that will be. And now we have about 50K miles together w/ the SPirit credit card, we better book the next trip before they "change" something else and we can't take it! thanks for the info.
Cancun Chica - When they put the current policy into effect I had two trips booked and paid for, besides the one that I was already on. So, had I returned to Florida with 2 bags I would have had to pay $10 even though I had been ticketed for a couple of months. And the same applied for the next two trips previosly purchased. It just did not seem right that they can do this. I called the 800 number and eventually asked if they could change a ticket price after already purchased. The answer was no but that this was a "service charge" and they could do it. I told them that the seat on the plane was a service charge and not a product but they had no answer for that. Corporate customer service is a thing of the past for them. The only good news is that I fly so often that i know people at the 3 airports I go in and out of and get great service from them if I need to change a flight or a date or something and occasionally get a free upgrade. But no more free drinks - only the Big Seat. Ha ha! And what happened to our cheap flights. They are up more than 50% in the last 2 months. I am not even booked beyond the trip I am in the middle of at the moment. I may try priceline.
A few days after I booked our flights to cancun, not that cheap, $350 each rt, I decided to extend the trip an extra day. They charged us $120 in service charges. They never had that before! I had been able to get it for free on the phone before. I do see a cheap flight to the Bahamas $125 rt from Ft Laud that we might take advantage of as I have $450 in vouchers.
Chica - Spirit just started, or is about to start service from FLL to Costa Rica. They temporarily moved their top guy in Cancun down there for the startup. Not a bad option for your vouchers either.
That's a great idea thanks. We've been to the Bahamas many times and would like to try a new place. I was also considering St Maarten, but the fare is pretty steep.
