You couldnt pay me to fly Spirit. They are the Wal-Mart of Airlines. Every single friend of mine who has booked with them has a war story when they get home. Maybe its out of Minneapolis they are bad but ive never heard a positive thing about them. They nickel and dime you to death, they squeeze people in like sardines, they are never on time, etc.. Id rather pay more for better service than pay less for a airline know for cutting corners. This is just my opinion and im sure there are people who love them

We fly spirit every so often out of Minneapolis(probably 10 times) and the 4 important things I would say are this:

    1. The run a limited schedule. So if there is a delay or cancellation, your odds of getting on another flight that day is very limited. We had a flight cancellation out of Vegas in nov(due to weather) and the next available flight was 2 days later. That said this is the only time we have had any type of delay with spirit.

    2. Pay for all your bags during booking. They charge way more to check bags at the gate. And yes you will be paying for checked and carry on. Though they don't charge for a back packs which they consider a personal item.

    3. Cocktails, sodas, snacks are for purchase only, even if you purchase the big seats up front. I think sodas are around $4 and $7-8 for alcohol.

    4. Make sure you pack accordingly. They have a 40lb weight restriction on checked bags for domestic flights and I'm not sure if that is different for CUN(most other airlines are 50lb). So with all the costumes, AIWC and assless leather chaps(leAther night :)) we bring, there isn't room for much else. Luckily the mrs has some small bikinis.

That said, we don't mind spirit as they are usually on time, have a new fleet of Airbus 320's, most staff are decent enough to us. Just know you will be paying for anything outside of your actual seat- and there won't be any surprises.

    Just our 8 cents . S&B

This is why I love this forum.
I didn't realize you had to prepay for checked bags both ways!

I just went in and paid for our return trip. Thanks for saving me $$$$$

Bob & I used Spirit and will not being using them again. They charged us alacart for everything; additional charge for your seat assignment- if you want to sit together, this was in the fine print. Overbooked the flights, almost did not get to board on what we paid for and confirmed. I am sure that you are checking bags. With this being said, you can join their Fare Club for a fee and receive discounts on these. If I recall the Fare club would have saved quite a bit. Charged some ridiculous fee for our bag being over by, I think it was 3lbs????? IDK. Whatever you do, make sure you pay for your baggage up front. And make so certain that you pre-weigh your bag before checking so you don't get the shaft. And be sure to arrive with ample time to get check in to be assured your flight. Best of luck to you and have fun at TTR. Ang

We just flew Spirit in early April for our trip. Booked the big seats a the front, which were great. The flight to Cancun went fine. The return, however, was much different. Arriving at the Cancun airport, the flight was delayed. When I got to the gate agent and asked "will we make our connection in Ft Lauderdale?" he simply said "No" like it was no big deal. He then plunked away on his keyboard for about 10 minutes, had casual conversation with others around him, then finally said to us "you have two options. Fly to Ft Lauderdale today, and then fly home to Phoenix tomorrow at 8pm on the flight you would have taken today." I asked what am I to do for 24 hours between flights he said "wait at airport or go to hotel?". I said, would the reservation for the big seats I made still hold (I'm tall and have a hard time sitting in the normal seats for long flights). He said no, you will be only on standby for that flight.

I say, what's the other option? His reply, "cancel your flight and we will refund your money and you can find another flight home on another airline."
Needless to say, this sounds crazy. but in the end, we purchased a flight on United home that day and actually arrived home earlier than we would have on Spirit. They refunded my money (sort of explain later) and I ended up about $150 in the negative after purchasing the flights back on United.
Now, 4 weeks later, I am still waiting on my refund. We purchased through a Travel agency, and they claim to have not received the refund.

They are a low cost, minimal option, minimal flight schedule airline. So you get what you pay for.

I for one will never fly them again....but they really didn't do anything wrong. It's what you get....

We like Spirit, will be using them from NOLA to Houston to Cancun. Yes, the regular seats are tight, if you have a carryon, pay online in advance, same with checked. And make sure to print out your boarding pass in advance or you will pay a fee for that at check in. It is what it is, discount air service. But it can be rough on any airline, even those you pay big bucks for. We have their credit card and the miles add up pretty quick, our flights were free except luggage and the tax fee. And you only get 40lbs for checked bags, so be sure to weigh a head of time.

Thanks again everyone! Getting closer and I'm starting to have crazy dreams about everything going wrong with the wedding , the flights, the honeymoon. It's tough sleeping BUT in reality I know things will happen the way they should and all will be great once we actually get to the wedding and then to TTR.

    THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!

ICk! We used to fly Spirit out of Atlantic City. The problem for us was the layover in Florida was not long enough to get through customs and immigration, reclaim your bags, re check your bags, then run like hell to the gate all the while praying your connecting flight has been delayed.... We only fly United now and only nonstop flights!

Well. I just had my first experience with their customer service personnel at Spirit. I was on hold for approximately 40 minutes before I even got to a live person BUT When I did I spoke with a very nice/polite girl who helped me right away with the issue and fixed the problem. So- I'm calling that a win despite the hold time. She was very helpful and confirmed all my info correctly. So that was good. And now we have all bags prepaid- larger seats booked for both trips down and back. Now to wait until we get to BWI airport to board the flight!
