Not in our Banamex account you cant. The whole thread was started because Banamex wouldnt accept our Dollars into our Peso account. How do you "know"?
Sorry about that Steve. You can deposit them into your dollar account. That is what they told me at Banamex, Paseo Cancun, either last Thursday or Friday. This is an Edit to the above: I had gone back and reread the whole thread, which is what you said. Sorry I was not clear that this was a confirmation. Dollars into dollar accounts only.
No probs TJ. I would have thought it unlikely you had a Peso account. I dont find it unlikely you can still deposit dollars into a dollar account
I wonder if at least some of this isn't due to the fact that especially in Q.R., so many big ticket items are listed in dollars. Especially real estate. When I was looking for land, all the prices were in dollars, and the owners wanted dollars. I believe this is technically illegal, according to Mexican Federal law. Prices in Mexico are supposed to be listed in pesos and items paid for with pesos.
The measures they are taking in the last couple of days have to do with so many counterfeit bills showing up.
Banks are afraid of counterfit bills and also drug money laundering issues. So they took a step to avoid some of their headaches and in the process made life difficult for others.
Real estate With all the real estate people in the Cancun/Mayan Riviera area, looks like at least one of them would be a reader of this forum, and be able to shed some light on a question suggested by Windknot's post, above; that is, how are currency exchanges made necessary in this context normally handled; and, has their work been impacted, at all, on exchanges occurring since 12 April, this year. When we were planning to buy here, we exchanged dollars for pesos at a bank in the U.S. which offers this service, Everbank, with the intention of wiring the money to the sellers bank account, in Mexico. But, I have no idea if there is a usual, or customary, way this is done; or, what difference it may make, practically speaking, whether the seller wants to be paid in dollars, or pesos. Any real estate agents out there? ______________________
V, you are talking about properties.... When I bought mine, I had to pay in dollars (one of my seller was American, one was Mexican). Now that I am selling, I am selling in dollars, as are all sellers who don't live in Mexico. But once I went to Sunglass Island at Plaza las Americas, all the prices were in dollars. you can pay in pesos, but they convert at the moment of the transaction to the exchange rate. Same for trips and other things, and not only in the HZ. So I went to see my friend a t the Profeco and asked him if it was legal. YES, it is, in Mexico (Cancun at least), you can give a price in either currency, but the customers have the choice to pay in pesos or dollars. In case of a property, I gave BILLS that I withdrew from the bank, so many from one hand to the other. Now, I won't accept that of course, and if someone wants to pay me in pesos, they will have to send me a wire transfer (and pay for the fees).
Thanks, Jenleib, for that. I guess what I'm wondering is, what's happened at closings occurring since 12 April, in which the buyer wanted to pay with dollars, and the seller wanted to be paid in pesos, now that the banks are operating under some kind of limitation on dollar to peso exchanges.
I can't answer that, V, and sorry for the numerous spelling mistakes I made this morning. I must be tired :icon_rolleyes:. But I realize the risk taken by myself (taking all that money out of the bank -Scotiabank at that time) and the sellers (taking it from me) in getting counterfeit bills
