To keep track of the fires i strongly recommend : WunderMap Interactive Radar & Weather Stations : Weather Underground There you can display the fires detected by satelite....
Not really belated, this is pretty typical. Hurricane season starts in June but we usually don't see good rains until July and August, peaking in September. With this hot weather and the warmer ocean temps, it's a year to watch for storms. ;-)
Wow, it must be creeping closer and closer.... Hopefully it will not reach the same extent as Alberta fires in Canada when the whole communities have been gutted by a raging fire storms just recently..... As V has pointed out, large areas of the Yucatan peninsula have already been burnt out... that's too bad since this part of Mexico is not that well-known for the abundance of forests....
Gringation quoted today for USA Today "Laura Winfree, an American living in Cancun who writes the Gringation blog, told me this via e-mail a few minutes ago:"From what I've heard, they are forest fires, mostly near the town of Leona Vicario and on the main highway that heads out towards Merida (about 20 minutes west of Cancun city limits). My neighborhood is in southern Cancun, and we haven't seen anything at all. However, I have several friends living in Cancun Centro (the heart of downtown) who have been woken up by burning smells a few times, but only in the early mornings. Other friends saw forest fires from the air when they were flying over. Everyone I know says they haven't seen smoke in Cancun, just smelt it." She says they've had a long, dry spell, but it has been raining in the last couple of days, so that's a good sign."
Thanks, Hudson! Didn't realize she was going to quote me, but that's kinda cool Got a lot of my info from this thread, actually... and from Mat. I actually thought about sending her the thread link, but wasn't sure if people would be cool with that.
