Same here Mat. This thread was the first I heard of it so I checked on Facebook where I have maybe 40 or 50 friends who live in Cancun, thinking they would have posted links to the main story. No one had mentioned it.
Its a crime to blow bubbles in Toronto... we're dangerous too Meet Officer Bubbles.... is new nick name here after the G20 Meetings
The link below seems to be a credible single news source on the Gulf Region, even though I think it has a strong agenda. At least there is some referencing to many other news sources and also links to previous articles. Mexico Gulf Reporter For our travel plans we just like to be aware of issues regarding not only our own personal safety and health but also the local conditions for resort employees for the communties we are going to. Will be at TTR soon !
It's spring break. These guys are always armed when the spring breakers are out. Only to keep it under control in case kids go crazy. I would not even bat an eye because of it. Actually it makes it safer and has nothing to do with an incident elsewhere.
This is a non issue for locals. Far removed from the Hotel Zone and the targets were specific. Lenin & Jodie -Away from the HZ we actually have another type. We have Transito, who deal with Traffic related things, violations, accidents, etc., and Municipio, dealing with crimes and other non traffic issues. My experiences with the Policia, while few, have been satisfactory.
Recently flew to Cancun from Chicago's Midway airport. The cop's at Midway were out of shape , sloppy, and lazy looking. The cops I saw at the Cancun airport were neat and in shape, looked like marines.
The police you normally see at the airport are Federales. These guys are sharp, friendly and helpful. But they are no nonsense guys, as you would expect in a busy airport. They are a visible presence. Also a presence downtown as I frequently see multiple pickup sytle vehicles, lights flashing, ready for anything, and with 4 or so heavily armed guys standing in the back. They are visible and on patrol. I saw a caravan of four Friday night on Yaxchilan. Uzi type weapons as well as smile-automatic or maybe even full auto weapons. It's a way of life and I have never had a feeling of other than police doing what they should be doing.
