Kenny, We were in cancun last oct, and text cost me .50 and calls cost about .65 a min... We are with att and this time we paid $50 for 50 text and 50 min of calls. You guys have a safe trip, see ya when you get there!!!
I might be wrong but with the calling cards don't you have to go out to the road and find a phone to use them, with buses and traffic hurtling by and all the noise that generates. Another option is renting a cellphone from Cell Phones - Cancun or Isla Mujeres - Cancun Valet Cost is 69 cents per minute with a minimum of $5 per day. You can take the phone wherever you go and receive incoming calls too.
Steve - We go to the convience store there is or used to be a payphone inside, quiet, cool and usually not too busy. The phones inside the resort don't work with the calling cards or didn't last time we tried.
We have used Cancun Valet for our last two trips and it worked out beautifully...Total of $50 for the week and we only used about 1/2 of our minutes calling home to the kiddies. Don't have to worry about roaming
I was going to mention that option of renting a cell phone, but I couldnt remember the details or the company, The phone cards can be a pain, but I usually head over to that store every day any way for some reason..So for me its not to bad.
we did the calling card thing... and after 3 times of me going out to the street pay phone to call the kids, and barely hearing them over the traffic... matt figured out how to use the phone in the hall just down from our room. (guess he's the smart one.. or has a magic touch) so yes, you CAN use the calling cards from inside the resort's pay phones. just have to use one of the 'other' numbers listed on the card (can't remember which one) one card was plenty for us each to call home to our kids several times while we were there.... and it was kinda nice to know they couldn't call us unless it was a REAL emergency (and would have to call the resort).
I have tried that but the connection is not fast enough for voice to land line. I was able to im on skype though (skype to skype)
A purchased international plan is a good idea...we did not use one last trip...when my phone connected to the tower i received a text from my carrier with the following prices.....$1.45/min for phone call..$0.60/text message..$30/mb data...make sure your roaming is off and all those apps with notifications and locations...$30/mb adds up quick...
