Just got back from a week there...we did see the federales helicopter fly over 3-4 times (think a bit more than normal). Also saw a group of them walking the sidewalk in front of the resort when we walked to the small convenience store next door. I imagine just making a presence to make the tourists feel safer more than anything... Other than that never left the resort once (no reason too really).
In the last year and a half we've been to playa del Carmen, tulum, Puerto morelos. TTR twice and just got back from Isla mujeres 3 weeks ago and never once had an issue. When were at TTR we pretty much stay at the resort but everywhere else we eat out and always try and find the restaurants that the locals eat at. We've ate and drank at some sketchy spots in Mexico and the chances of something happening are so slim and we aren't gonna live in fear. There's areas of Minneapolis I wouldn't dare try and go eat/drink at that are way worse than anywhere weve been in mexico. Dont get me wrong i am on a higher alert in some areas and don't get super wasted but that's how I am in any city anywhere.
Any suggestions on where to stay on Isla Mujeres for four nights in early January? A private home would be great, but would also consider one of the resorts.
Mexico is a dangerous place I would not recommend going... Then maybe the prices will go back down. LOL
It's the job of the media to report on problems (violence, drugs, political unrest, danger facing tourists, etc) and scary topics like those tend to stick in our memory more vividly than others. It's a one-two punch that can make it seem like "that's all we ever hear about the country of _______." Each of us has hear--what?--a few credible stories of problems for tourists like us in places we'd actually go? Compare that to the thousands of positive stories on this one message board regarding this one resort alone. I'll take those odds any day.
Not sure what you do for a living, but DAMM, I thought we were luck with 3 trips a year...lol. can I have a job?
in March on our trip to the little store across the street and on the trip to and from the airport they had patrols going by .. a truck with some kind of rifle attached to it with ( wes probably knows what kind ) a guy riding with it .. and 3 or 4 other guys in that truck as well we weren't worried at all they are going to take care of the hotel area it is way to much money for them if the tourist go away
