I think TTR is generally pretty safe. The only issue we've ever seen were 2 MAJOR brawls....and I mean MAJOR......both were at Patty o's. One was in 2008 and the other in the summer of 2010. People were badly hurt.....waaaaaaaay past a fist fight. Both started by single guys hitting on married women. We saw 3 married guys defending their wives against 6-7 single guys. One of the single guys must have said something to one of the ladies because she slapped the shit out of him....then he shoved her off a barstool onto the ground........and then all hell broke loose.

Looks like you got plenty of advice. Here is my 2 cents worth. We have been going to TTR Cancun for 7 years now and we have never heard or seen any crimes and we have evene left the resort several times to go shopping. We read all the reports and how bad mexico is and we have never seen crimes. Just like some have said dont leave your wallet out with money, the security is every where. Drink, get naked , have fun and be merry....... You will have more fun and lots and lots of memories!!!! Enjoy your selves.....

Regarding reports from Mexico that people consider when traveling to the beach in Mexico. Yes, there are cartels and it is real. It is just like the mafia where store owners have to pay a cartel for protection. Yes they deal in drugs and guns. I don't think there is much in the Yucatan peninsula but the people I know from Mexico are primarily from the northern part of the state. The Mexicans I know tell me it is not as safe as it used to be in thier cities but it is still don't be at the wrong place at the wrong time and you are safe. That sounds like Dallas Fort Worth.

Saying that, I plan to go to Guanajuato sometime in the near future. I have wanted to go there for a long time. A beautiful colonial city with beautiful weather.

So people ask me if it is safe to go to Mexico. I just ask them if they have been down to (insert your local drug part of town) to buy drugs lately. Well don't go to that part of town in Mexico if you wouldn't do it in your own town. People really are confused about the reports.

We lost a bag with a camera money and clothes one day and I had a lot of support help while looking for it and it was found. Then we lost clothes the next day which were found. If there is crime there, We never saw it. Like Cardinalcpl said use the safe! We used it everyday and came back with the same same valuables we arrived with.

I don't know about y'all, but those tiles around and in the pool on the slopes get about as slick as a buttered eel[s ass at times. Been there several times when someone's REALLY eaten a bad fall, e.g. broken wrist/arm.

Slippery hazards aside, the most common problem at TTR is the "Guy who won't just take a no and go away," which story can have various endings, from hilarious, to tragic, to some which are just funny. Still, that is a problem, but it is NOT TTR specific at all.

Real high level crime, we've never noticed anything at all, not once. Like it that way, too.s

Never been to Mexico yet, but im pretty sure its similar to other countries ive been in the context of, dont get into situations where it can have a bad outcome and use your common sense and logic. Also, ask questions before you venture off if you decide to. Crime exist everywhere, but a lot of times being a victim of a crime can be avoided. Other hotels ive been, the most ive heard about is peoples belongings getting stolen. Thats why you ALWAYS gotta lock your belongs up when you leave the room and dont leave anything around youre not willing to lose (even when out).

Personally im not worried about safety in Cancun, after travelling around a bit i realized almost nothing major is gunna happen to you within the hotel zones. Still keep cautious of course, but dont get paranoid....youre there to enjoy your vacation :)

    Just my experience/opinion
