Hi everyone! We are going to TTR in July and we thought it might be a good idea to rent a car to travel across the Riviera Maya, down to Playa del Carmen and all those beautiful places. Does anyone have experience renting a car in Cancun? is it necessary to get to know different beaches or is it better to go with hotel transfers?, is it safe to leave the car parked next to the beach? How is the traffic overall in that area? Sorry for the total noob questions, we just wanted to make sure we are making the right decision from the get go. Thanks for your replies in advance! Damian
Most people on here never leave the party at TTR so no need for a car. May not get any direct answers? That said we rented many cars elsewhere in Mexico though. Only advice is to make sure your CC will cover you in Mexico on the rental insurance, your GPS might be wrong and recognize that you are not in the States, traffic violations and minor accidents can be handled very differently in parts of Mexico ($$$).
USA transfer will take you anywhere and pick you up. Much safer that way. Car rentals look cheap until you add insurance. If your not familiar with the rules in a foreign country, I wouldn’t recommend it. Others will disagree.
I’ve been to the Riviera Maya a few times, and renting a car is definitely a good idea if you want to explore at your own pace. I’ve driven down to Playa del Carmen and checked out some of the hidden beaches – it’s stunning! Just make sure you park in well-lit, secure areas near the beaches, as some places can be a little sketchy. If you’re not super comfortable with driving, bookinglane.com can be a great option to book a chauffeur service to take you around. Traffic can get heavy in touristy areas, but it's manageable.
