    Isla Mujeres Ferry

Davy and Rhonda, which ferry do you take a cab to? Puerta Juarez?
    How much is the cab?

Have been checking it out. Was going to get it from Embarcadero as I believe that is walking distance but it means you have to leave the island at around 5?

Chichen Itza is excelent. Worth the trip for sure. Coba > Tulum but Tulum is still good. Coba was better because you can climb it and it was forested and bigger. Tulum was rather small.

If you are going to Chichen Itza, it's probably a plan to find 2-3 couples around the resort that want to go. Grab a minivan taxi and hire the guy for a day. Stop at Walmart on the way out of town and buy a cooler and some beer/water and take off. Rent a private guide when you get there to show just your group around. Don't get herded around like cattle with a bus tour. It'd be nice of you to buy your cabbies dinner while your out.

To go to Ilsa, you can walk out the front doors of the resort and turn left. walk down the sidewalk until you get to the harbor where they have the pirate ships that they use for the pirate cruise. They are big and you should be able to see them just fine. Go in there and buy some tickets for the ferry. They make good pina coladas in there from scratch if you have to wait. If you are going to come back on those ferries, then you need to leave the island by 5. if you miss the ferry, it's not a big deal. just jump the ferry over to Puerto Juarez when you are ready to come back and then grab a cab from there back to the resort. you can also do the bus back to the resort from there if you are adventurous.

I don't really like the tours. I prefer running on my own schedule. tours also get paid by specific restaurants to bring their tourists there. and i'd rather spend my time at the place that I'm going rather than stopping in every other restaurant and knick-knack place along the way.

I like getting out of the resort at least once a trip and going to see something. There is no shortage of very cool things around Cancun. Besides, it's a great way to get some pictures that you can actually show to friends and family :icon_biggrin:

We went to Chichen Itza on the tour by the sexy pool and if we could have a do-over we totally would not go that way. The problem with the public tours is that they take you to places you don't care about and don't spend enough time at the ruins. We didn't have other people at the resort who wanted to share a private tour with us so the cost for just the two of us would have been $300. If we had known then what we know now, we would have rented a car, purchased a map, and just go on our own to Chichen Itza. The road from Cancun to the ruins is a toll road that is very safe. The big tours take you to an awful place for lunch (wow the food was bad!) and they spend way too much time at that place so people will buy crap from the vendors. Our tour took us way out of the way to visit a cenote, which was pretty cool, but it was not close to Chichen Itza. Lunch took 2 hours, then another 45 minutes or so to get to the ruins. When we finally got in, we only had 2 hours left before they closed. We could have spent all day there and been very happy - and just brought a bag lunch and some water. That is what we would do if we could go back in time, rent a car, bring a lunch, and spend all day at the ruins. You can take a guided tour there, then spend the rest of the day looking at stuff that is SO interesting.
