I get that Houston is larger than Cancun, but all I needed to think about was shootings and drug-related violence Here in Houston, then compare with what I can read about and look up on Cancun.... i.e. same-same, pretty much per capita. Here though, it's "Ho hum, another drive by in the hood." But, because it happened in a tourist vacation spot (Houston Does have a tourist industry, as weird as that sounds) all of the sudden it's "Don't go to Cancun! It's dangerous there!" Hell... it's dangerous as hell going to a Rockets NBA game, walking to/from the arena...
Thanks for the information Steve. I don't post here much and never yet in this forum since we frequent TTR, far to shy:aktion014:. We were planning to rent a car for the first two days of our trip and head down to Tulum and Akumal. Would you recommend against this due to recent events? Our travel would take us from the airport to Tulum and then back to the Cancun Hotel Zone the next day.
I don't see any problem with that. The road is good, there may be a few Police or Army checkpoints on the way especially close to Tulum but they are nothing to worry about. The main thing to watch out for is corrupt cops and lunatic drivers. Stick to the speed limit and apply extra caution than you might normally do when driving i.e. extra stopping distance and lane discipline.
If you can find 2 other couples you can rent a private van for the day with driver. ( they have smaller and larger vans ) We did this and found is economical and stress free. They also allowed us to bring and pick up ice and refreshments . There is a link at the bottom of the forum that will lead you to the info .
