How often do you have emergencies at home? When you get so drunk you wake up and don't know where the hell you are, the house phone probably won't do you any good.
if I call 911 with my house phone they know where to go immediately. if I call 911 with my cellphone they can find out what neighborhood I'm in by the proximity to the nearest towers... but not exactly. speaking of 9/11.. you may recall that on that day cellphone service was interrupted for some of us in the NYC Metro area... but the land line worked just fine. And if I get that drunk, Hanky.. it just means I'm in Cancun and not using my cellphone anyway
Most phones already do but eventually all the phones are going to have GPS built in so when you call 911, you send your coordinates as well. On 9/11, all the towers were busy because everyone was trying to use their cell phone (because they were not at home) at once. If everyone in NYC try to use their land line all at once, it'd overwhelm the switchboard as well. But I can't think of any home emergency that affects thousands and thousands of people at once.
