Danger - The Pirate Mundaca has an empty tomb in this cemetary. Go figure. Las Aluxes? Maybe. Carved by Mundaca himself on the tomb, are a skull and cross bones, in memory of his pirating days and the words (in English translation), "As you are, I was. As I am, you will be".

T.J., yup, as I found out back in 1987 meandering the Isla looking for the real gravesite that is just a memorial. Didn't they bury him in Merida or some such thing brokenhearted over lost love, or so goes the legend.

Hell, I've been still trying to see Cuba from Punta Sur for over two decades but some how I figure that's just a joke played on the gringos, especially the inebriated ones but the view is spectacular anyway. ;-)

Hey Dangers. I think Mundaca went crazy. Never chased down his whole story though as to where his remains might be. Embalming never was a big priority here and is still not.

On a map it looks like one end of Cuba is about the same distance from Cancun/Isla M as its northern border is from Key West. Key West has no elevation but I am pretty sure you cannot see Cuba from there during the day.

That said, the first weekend in Dec I was on Isla, at a home on the south end for the weekend and we could clearly see lights in the direction of Cuba. Too many and too aligned to be ships or any kind of boat. I am looking at Google Maps now and the lights were exactly off the shore from our vantage point. Had to be Cuba as there is nothing else out there. Well, it could be Aluxes but I don't think so. LOL. But you can see if you are at Punta Sur, you have to look over toward 9:00 and not dead ahead toward noon in order to be looking in the direction of the westermost part of Cuba. Next trip over, I will check out that direction during the day if I can drag myself away from Buho's.

Sounds good enough to me TJ, I never thought to bother to look at night except this latest visit at PA, usually to enchanted with the nightlife on Hildalgo from a perch at Buccanero's, the moonlit sea at Bujo's or some banter and brew at Jax. I'll have to remember to make the attempt at night again next time but I didn't see anything from the PA rooftops except the cruise ships heading back and forth from Coz.

Then again, my nautical eyesight isn't what it use to be, lol.

Maybe's it's those damn Alux playing tricks on my mind but I always leave them a shot or two to keep them on their best behavior.
