USA Transfers is the way to go! They got us to the front desk checking in at TTR within 20 minutes of hitting the "Green and Go" at customs and nine days later we walked out of the lobby and they were there waiting for us exactly on time. No calls to confirm, no worries -- very reliable. For $55 a private round trip --- you can't beat it.
You can do either. If it were me I'd pay when I get there - you do have to pay for the return transfer when you arrive though. That's due to the convoluted "laws" that taxi drivers lobbied for against private transfer companies who they feel take their business, and were upset that their rip off opportunities were reduced. The taxi driver union is very powerful in Cancun, and they made sure that private transfer companies could only pick you up if you had pre-paid in advance. Taxi drivers say if it's not pre-paid it is just another taxi, and the local government backed them on it (for extra votes and a sign in the back of every taxi cab telling people to vote for them). The owner of USA Transfers has been a good friend of mine for 10 years. He's a Canadian from Edmonton who knows the value of customer service, as you can tell by the above recommendations of those who used them before. No way I would recommend them if I didn't feel they were the best option. When we go to England every summer we use them ourselves. When you're on vacation you want to maximise your fun time, imho dont get a cheapo transfer dropping off other people at other hotels the long way round to save yourself a few dollars and cutting your valuable vacation time down. Arrive at the hotel early, snag the best rooms and be at the swim up bar sipping a drink when the bus pulls in with those on your flight who didnt know - one hour later. Private all the way!
I just started always getting "private" transports from the Cancun airport to where we're going. It costs like $20 more is all with Lomas travel, for instance. The "trip time" is the same, almost exactly. Right about 35 minutes, I think, but the comfort level is much higher. Also, there is the fact that there is NO WAITING when you're a private transport. Both times we've done it, the vehicle has been there, waiting ON US. Nice... Remember, get your first beer at the little beer stand outside of the airport and take it with you on your ride. Never to soon to start the bar service in Cancun.
Anything wrong with just grabbing a cab at the airport? I can negotiate in Spanish, so not worried about getting ripped off. We are flying Mexicana Airlines with free drinks and a layover in Mexico City so I am expecting to arrive hammered and ready to book out of the airport quickly. Marty
One thing you do not want to do is just grab a cab when you arrive Real taxis are not permitted to pick up at the airport, only drop off. There will be some cars there with 'taxi' painted on the side but they are simply a company that paid for a licence to be the only company allowed to pick up folks who don't have a pre-booked transfer. They know you are a fish in a barrel and charge accordingly - I've heard of people paying $70 to use them one way. Far better to use USA Transfers for $55 return, or even book one way for $30 and take a regular cab back for around $25.
