I agree with Jim that Mexico has to collect, and properly use, more taxes in order to emerge into the first world. I'm also dubious as to how well public monies are used here, is there truly a way here to insure transparency and be certain public funds don't line the pockets of the politicians?

I own two properties here and pay less than $75 USD a year in property tax. My condo taxes in Boulder, CO were $1400 USD a year. Here I get broken pavement and lack of public safety and cops I don't trust. There I had parks with proper trash receptacles (bear-proof ones, no less) at convenient locations, and wheelchair accessible sidewalks, and bike paths (miles and miles of bike paths). I would gladly pay much higher property taxes here if I got first-world benefits.

It seems to me that sales taxes (IVA) put an unfair burden on the poor, who spend nearly all the money they make. I would prefer to see an increased tax burden on those of us who can afford more, people with property, people with high incomes, people who purchase luxury items.

I'm not sure that increasing the cost of petrol is fair to the poor, as it makes everything more expensive. But clearly Pemex is fubared and it's bad for everyone in Mexico for it to operate in the red. Unfortunately it seems the corruption present in Pemex is so ingrained as to be part of the system, it won't be cleaned up easily or painlessly.

Hey, if we had proper bike paths here we could ride our bikes instead of needing to fill our tanks. I miss proper bikes paths, sigh.

    Compra 12.69

This is the Banamex closing rate when buying MXN, with USD. That equates to $2.335 USD per gallon at a price of $7.8 MXN per liter.

When the price was $7.41, which it was for a very long time, while the tipo de cambio was hovering around $13.00 to $1.00, that equated to $2.166 USD per gallon.

The net effect in USD is an increase of 7.77%.

During the same time, prices in the Orlando are comparable to Cancun Gringa's MN prices.

I am so anal that every time I fill my tank, I sit there figuring the price per gallon. I use 3.8 liters per gallon, and www.banamex.com and do it on the spot, every single time. Will be doing it again on Tuesday when I return from freezing ass cold FL. Hey Gringa, it is a rainy 64 deg today but going below 40 tonight. Brrrr.

Rivergirl ~ wow. $75 property tax in Cancun and $1400 in Colorado? I pay $5,000/year on my property in Minnesota. :icon_eek:

    L,

Balmy you say. At least you have balmy. Jeje.

I am sure you have something or someone keeping you warm. I have Lucy, my daughter's leetle Pekingese, for whom I am babysitting for the next 2 days. She is so cute.

    HNY mi amiga,
