If you catch either the bus or collectivo in Playa, they drop you off in dowtown Cancun, not the hotel zone. You would then just transfer to another bus to get to the hotel zone. Laura's mapguide is an excellent resource for those who like to travel more independantly or like the locals do. It answers practically every question you could have regarding how to get around.
