You do need a valid US Passport to enter Mexico and it needs to be valid for six months or more from your return date.

Most Airlines will have their own rules despite what the State Dept says.. So better check both if your gonna role the dice.. The Airline is typically the one who will enforce the 6 month rule..

Yes and no. It is immigration/customs at whatever country you are going to that will make the final decision. That being said, the airline will get stuck transporting you back to your country of origin if you are not admitted to the destination country, so they have an interest in making sure you follow the rules that get enforced. Point being, just because the airline allows you to fly does not mean you will be admitted to Mexico. But as you point out, if the airline does not believe you have a travel document that will be acceptable to the destination country, you won't be flying.

The good news is it sounds like the US State Department is not affected quite as much by the government shutdown as some other departments.

    This is correct.

You are allowed to stay up to 6 months after your arrival on a tourist visa. So, they want to avoid the possibility of someone staying that period of time and then trying to leave with an expired passport. Again, as above, not sure how strictly this is enforced.

I know with a UK passport as I have, you can renew early and have the extra time added on top of the expiry date. Not sure if it's the same for the US or Canada. If it is, might as well renew now.

I’m not from the U.S. so I’m not affected at all. Canada passport office is 25 min from here as well
