This is not true. The airlines can deny you boarding if the passport expires less then 6 months prior to return departure. They can also deny entry once you are off the plane just in case they allowed you to board. Your travel agent is wrong and this can cause a major headache for you. West Jet person is also wrong on this and if they are not the ones allowing boarding you may have a problem at the airport either in Canada or Mexico. Dont risk it.

If you are a US Citizen you can renew your passport either by going to the passport office directly with flight plans withing a couple of days, or have it expedited (will cost almost double the normal renewal rate) and you can have it back within about 2 weeks. Sorry but I do not know the way they work on this in Canada.

Lol .. I'm a canadian citizen, and going to mexico or US my passport doen't need to be valid for 6 months ( They recommand it ) but it doesn't apply
And because I'm right accross the place where they make the passport it took for me about a week to have one .
All Canadian citizens need a valid passport to enter Mexico. Canadian citizens without a valid passport will not be allowed entry into Mexico and will be returned to Canada. In order to avoid delays and misunderstandings, we strongly recommend that you travel with a passport valid for six months after your arrival date.

We did it with 2 weeks before the passport was expire with no prob ! :)

But here they say something else . ( both on gouvernment of canada website lol

    Passport

Canadian citizens, including those with dual citizenship, must present a valid passport in order to enter and exit Mexico. Canadians without a valid passport will be refused entry and returned to Canada. The passport must be valid until the date of expected departure from Mexico. Before you leave, ask your transportation company about its requirements related to passport validity, which may be more stringent than the country's entry rules.

I'm pretty sure the actual law is that your passport does have to be valid for 6 months from your date of entry. Why would they "recommend it" if it wasn't necessary? It wouldn't offer any benefits.

Laws are not always enforced. I am sure the immigration guys see passports due to expire in less than 6 months fifty times a day. What are they going to do? Send everyone back, or overlook it because 999 times out of 1000 the tourist will be going home in a week or two.

It's like speeding, you can get away with doing 41/42 mph in a 40mph zone. But if the powers that be want to be awkward, they can apply the law. In Youngmasscouple's case they can get an extension without too much trouble, and that may avoid a wasted vacation and a decent amount of money lost so it would be wise to do so.

Having a return ticket posted before the expiration date may weigh into the rejection factor.

    Still a gamble

It only take two weeks to get a new one. Why the hell would you even risk it. You get the wrong girl and your not going and out the money. WTF.

for me it takes at least 6 weeks, I'm a UK citizen, American resident, and I live in America so it's more of a process for me. I'm going for an extension on Monday, and I should be good after that. It's too late at this point to renew so this is my only option.
