Wow, I'm glad you asked this question as the replies were very informative! I'm in a similar situation but I hadn't realized there was any risk! My husband encouraged me last week to renew my passport "just in case" - I'm so glad he did!
I spoke to the Mexican consulate today and they said there is no 6 month rule but it is up to the officer and they can refuse me, but I was able to set up a date to get an extension on my passport and mexico allows the extension, so as of right now im 99% sure you're all going to have to put up with me for a few days. Steve thanks a lot for all the info, helped a lot. And for anyone curious, they speak better English at the Mexican consulate than the UK consolute haha
Forget the officer you spoke to. The airline can deny you boarding before you even get on the plane. Renew your passport and end of discussion.
considering if takes 6 weeks to do and I'm leaving on the 28th I'm going to have to chance it, its a year extension and everything I've read is that its just as good so we'll see what happens.
For canadian and us citizen this law doesn't aply. I had Ben passport expiring 2 weeks, after my travel and the girl at west jet just told us to make sure to renew is passport as soon as you're here.
Here's what I found Passport validity Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Mexico. The Mexican authorities have confirmed they will accept British passports extended by 12 months by British Embassies and Consulates under additional measures put in place in mid-2014.
Thanks jess, I ended up finding the same thing, and was able to talk to both consoluts, they said I'm good with an extension... worst comes to worst I'll have to take a swim from Florida haha
