We went to Isla Holbox for the first time this weekend and fell in love with the island. The big adventure part of the weekend was helping fight a huge palapa fire at one of the beach hotels. This is an island with no fire department, no water lines and no plan of action. We spent two and a half hours fighting this fire in high winds using toy sand buckets and tea kettles filled with pool water. Crazy! Please extinguish your ciggies in water when staying in a palapa, this was started by a stupid kid sneaking a smoke and burning his fingers on the butt then throwing it into the palapa. There are pics and the full story up on the blog if anyone's interested. The hotel was the Palapas del Sol and they ended up losing four buildings, though it could have been much worse. Other than that, we LOVED Holbox and will go back as soon as we can, highly recommend it.
