Trip Report January 3 through January 10, 2009

First of all we had an absolutely fantastic time. Our only regrets are that we were scoping out Cancun for a trip with the kids and we spent way too much time early on doing stuff and not near enough time enjoying Temptations till the end of the week.

Warning for Newbies! Those folks at the airport dressed up and looking official that try to make it sound like they need to check your transportation papers, they are timeshare salesmen. Just say no thank you and walk right on past. Cancun is a hotbed of timeshare sales. Just develop a thick skin and don’t begin to listen or you’ll spend half your vacation saying “no”.

The good: The place is immaculate. We had to get up at first sparrow fart for our trip to Tulum and they had PattyO’s completely taken apart and were ankle deep in water scrubbing the entire plaza. The food at Il Piacere and Bellavista is absolutely fantastic. Even the buffet, although a bit repetitive by the end of the week was quite good, especially by timeshare standards. The staff is incredible. We have been to several “no tipping” places, with one other exception, no tips = no service. First, we did and we would encourage you to tip, but at no time was there ever the slightest hint that tipping was necessary or expected. You got the same fantastic service even when you forgot to bring some cash with you to the pool. We especially wanted to mention a waiter at Margarita’s (and are embarrassed that we don’t remember his name, but we did long enough to mention him on the survey card). When C took on a few too many Miami Vice’s prior to Casino Night, it was clear she wasn’t going to make it though dinner. He offered and happily brought our dinner up to the room for us. Then recognized me the next day as I walked past and asked to make sure C was ok. Overall, the place is just a blast.

The bad: The muzak at the quiet pool is just awful. Ok we get it, it’s a quiet pool but how about some nice classical music, soft rock, or even silence. I don’t know where they got it, but that was simply the worst. Second, if you aren’t into staying up till 3 or 4 in the morning, make sure you get a room away from PattyO’s. We were right on the plaza which was very convenient, but incredibly noisy, especially when large groups got back from a bar crawl. Finally, they were way too anxious to head off for the bar trips after shows. There are several nights we would have been happy just to stay at Nice Shoes if they would have left the bar open and music playing. All I can guess is that they were trying to keep things from getting too crazy after they had already gotten crazy. (If you’ve been to the shows that sentence makes sense). Oh well, just head over to PattyO’s and be one of the people we were complaining about making noise.

    What we did:

Trip to Tulum – This was fantastic! We lucked out in having a guide that was half Mayan and he had a huge number of family anecdotes and obviously had a tremendous love of the culture and that really came though as he did the tour. The only down side to this is the military checkpoints on the highway. This can make a relatively short distance wise bus ride, interminable. See our pics posted a twinimini’s Fotki site, http://public.fotki.com/TemptationPics/ric-and-c-g-rated/

Snorkeling in an Estuary (bayou) – Initially this was also an incredible experience. The setting was great and the idea of snorkeling in crystal clear water through the swamp roots is just so different. Unfortunately, it starts getting a little boring. There aren’t all that many types of fish and many are right out of your typical freshwater aquarium. But then we came across a manatee and were able to follow him/her around for nearly 20 minutes. Again pictures at Fotki.

Massage at the Cancun Palace – The massage was nice and the resort very plush; very high end booze. The food wasn’t very good, and it was kind of a waste of a day and the timeshare spiel we had to sit through wasn’t worth it. (The newbie warning is from our own painful experience).

Trip to Isla Mujeres – Fantastic place to visit, but I don’t think enough to do to actually stay there. Do the snorkeling at Playa Norte if you get a chance, best we’ve found around Cancun/Cozumel.

Swim with Dolphins – More for the kids really. It isn’t so much swimming with dolphins as it is getting to watch the trainers up close with the dolphins and in the water with them. The dolphins obviously don’t have the same trust in you as they do with their trainer, so while there is interaction it isn’t a lot. Do go as a group, they don’t allow you to take your own pictures and try hard to sell you the ones they take. If you go as a group and know most of the people, then you won’t feel too ripped off buying a picture or two.

Ok, those of you who are good at math have already figured out this just left us a couple of days to enjoy Temptations; big mistake for us, we had a blast those couple of days. Some of the stories may have to be shared by PM and not here, but I’ll drop some hints and just like the pictures, you tell us yours and we tell ours.

The Male Dance Show – This was tactical error one for us. We were out on one of the trips and didn’t get back and get dinner till late so we showed up just as the show was starting. The only chairs were right up next to the stage. Seemed fine to us, till we found out just how much audience participation there was and how involuntary it might be for the females. C wasn’t drunk enough for that and after being pointed at and told you’re next as the dancer was removing his last stitch, we beat a hasty retreat and headed for PattyO’s.

PattyO’s – Fun place till all hours. The bartenders have great fun, I wish they had something other than the one Victoria’s Secret video to play, but the snacks are definitely good (grilled shrimp k-bobs and tuna sashimi, mmm) This is where the swingers or what was the term coined here, swayers, seem to meet. Many of the females really go all out dressing for success. The dressing up part seemed to be lots of fun for C and she joined in with that big time. Then we got propositioned for some private partying. That was a shock to her for sure! First, don’t let that worry you if that doesn’t appeal mostly it’s just a fun bar. The proposition was subtle, the people were very nice and we’d hit it off well with them, thus the offer. It isn’t like Leisure Suit Larry walks around going hubba-hubba propositioning every lady or couple he sees. Actually the offer intrigued us enough that later in the week C got well lubricated and started to plan for company; too lubricated it turned out but that’s an offline story. Some pictures in the Not-G site, so trade passwords and stories for the rest.

The sexy pool – Great fun. We loved the events. A bit naughty, but nothing you won’t see at any college, and tamer than you’ll see at most. It is topless, but C actually didn’t go topless all that much because at times it seemed like almost no one else was. The bar could be crowded, but be patient; the bartenders will get to you. I’ll be posting pictures of the balloon bursting game soon at Fotki. I think those are G-rated enough. If not they’ll be in our non-G folder.

Casino Night – The good news is that C had decided to go all out for this. The bad news is that was the day we did the Tulum trip. Which meant we spent all day out walking in the hot sun, plus we couldn’t get dinner reservations till late. Also and unfortunately the drink of the day was a Miami Vice (see the favorite drinks thread). C had 4 of those before dinner and another with dinner. Making a long story short, the waiter offered to bring our dinner to the room before C passed out in the restaurant. Dinner a-la room service was great and somewhat revived C. So we headed out to Casino Night.

We were too late to get any chips and C was still pretty wobbly, so we grabbed a couple of barstools and were trying to get her dress off (yes at that point it was a two person operation). We gave up on that idea when she almost fell off the stool. But, it was fun people watching for a while. For newbies the outfits ranged the entire gamut from fully dressed, to one pair of cotton bunny jammies, to sexy but showing nothing, to far more revealing than what C was wearing (well wearing under her dress but her intentions were good……er bad……er whatever). Since we were both dressed I didn’t feel right taking pictures, plus no one else was taking any so there are pictures of C getting dressed (undressed) for the party at the non-G folder, but none of the actual party. Overall it seemed everyone was having a great time and no one should have to worry too much about what they’ll see there. We’ll be there earlier and with less alcohol on board the next time.

Tequilla volleyball – C chickened out on this one, really because she feared where the drinking would go. She’d had taken on a bit too much to drink the last couple of days (wasn’t this the day after Casino Night??) Once she saw what else went on, she was really glad she chickened out, one piece suit an all……. But she did stay and watch. Do have pictures of the game (soon to be posted), will obviously have to post those in the non-G folder.

Booze cruise – This is one thing we missed and regretted. Several new friends were asking us to come along Friday evening. It sounded like great fun and we had pretty much decided to go, but were angsting about needing to pack (we had to leave the next morning). When we finally decided to go it was too late and we couldn’t find anyone to sign up. Oh well, sounded like fun and we had met so many great people.

I’m sure I missed tons, but this is too long already. Also, I’d best defend C. She really isn’t a lush. In fact, the problem is she is exactly the opposite. So she is way out of practice drinking and it doesn’t take much to put her lights out. Overall we give Temptations 4 thumbs up and we’ll be back soon. Looking into maybe trying the Cabo side as well. Anyone we met, drop us a line we’d love to stay in touch!!!

Great TR, thanks for taking the time to write it.

The board is moving so fast these days that I thought I'd give you a bump up as I missed it when you first posted it.
