I do my early morning shorter runs (5 miles or less) on an empty stomach to train my body to pull from fat stores for energy. There are articles online that explain the proper way to do this, and following that advice has helped me with limiting what I have to eat running a half marathon - but it takes months of patience to fully train your body in this way. The other thing that really helped me was reading the book 6 Weeks to OMG. A lot of people talked about that book both positive and negative, but the advice about when to eat to lose weight with exercise, and about sitting in a cool bath were helpful to me in dealing with my metabolism problems with hypothyroidism.
