Rivergirl, others living in Cancun: PLEASE tell us what the officials over there are saying. There were 5 cases being investigated for swine flu. Any status? How do officials reconcile so many cases coming back (just one more today in Victoria, BC) vs. no cases in Cancun? Please help.
Situation to date is 22 possible cases of which 15 have proven negative and 7 still awaiting analysis results. Still zero confirmed cases.
Still no cases being reported here, they've discounted all but a few as regular seasonal flu and the rest are still being investigated (last I read was five cases being tested). I don't think the authorities here could possibly speculate as to why people returning from Cancun are sick yet there are no cases here. If I were to hazard a guess (and that's all it is, I have no idea either), they may have picked something up on the plane.
They are picking figures out of the air i dont believe its as bad as they say 2 week ago if you had the sniffles you would have a cold now with the media hype every case is getting called swine flu!
The thing that gets me also is that they keep putting out that the difference with this strain from the others is that it includes nausea/vomiting and diarrhea. Am I the only one that has experienced that every time that I get the flu, no matter what strain? Sorry for the TMI, but I just don't see any difference symptom wise that I haven't experienced already from the other strains. Other than it includes strains from pigs, birds, & humans that is... scientifically speaking.
They call them suspect cases, and then a day or two later it gets confirmed (or rejected) by CDC. So I don't think it is hype. Most cases have been officially confirmed so far (very few were regular flu).
Just to remind everyone the "regular" seasonal flu is estimated to kill around 30,000 to 50,000 Americans every year.. and this is "normal".. so keep that in mind while you freak out about the Swine Flue that is going around..... which so far hasn't even begun to approach those numbers.... I don't have any numbers for what the "ordinary" flu death toll is in a given year for Mexico.. but I'd expect its similar if not a little higher in the rural areas. Point is if you put the news about the Swine Flu into perspective its not that scary.. at least not at this point. I know the scientists are getting excited about it, but then again they seem to always be predicting "the big one" and most times they are wrong.... standard hygiene and common sense are the best way to handle this IMHO, causing panic, shutting everything down and locking yourself in your basement isn't called for, at this time.....
JD, Trigger is right. I have been here for 7 years as of May and have the sniffles, sneezes and a f%*+#n' runny nose every year around this time. C'mon down and have a great time. Just stay away from any drugs and women you don't know, you may catch something worse than the "Swine Flu" and have to find an explanation to your girlfriend. LMAO
