Given that this is the Swine Flu thread I'd like to humbly ask that we talk about the Swine Flu here.
RiverGirl, if you are talking about my post, I was simply trying to reduce the temperature on this thread.
Damn mix, missed that one so i went back and did some digging. You are 100% right. Stevesteve is not real. He took the name from our Steve. Who BTW lives in Cancun I have met him and his wonderful wife. and family. So what is it you REALLY want or are you going to sit in your trailer and suck on a beer, probably Corona and take a hit off Cuevro (Which neither of which we drink). The point comes down to "Cancun is fine, the people are fine and we who live here are fine" Thanks for your concern. Mix thanks for the eye opening!!!
stevesteve - I was talking about your off-topics posts and everyone else's too. Off-topic posts can go in new or separate threads. Dragging this thread, kicking and screaming, back on target now...ahem... Steve, I know you will find this interesting, hopefully others will also. Google.org is charting searches related to Swine Flu. They seem to have found that search data is closing matching the trend of actual cases. Very cool stuff. Les Webb, 64, has lived in Cancun, Mexico, for eight years. He said the ordinarily bustling hotspot became a "ghost town" yesterday evening, with few people walking out on the streets. All the schools in the country are now closed until May 6, he said. During the two week Easter break the roads, normally bustling with parents taking their children to school, fall silent. http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/ne...Blackwood_man_describes_Mexican__ghost_town_/
flu Les Webb obviously wasn't anywhere I went yesterday. Too many people everywhere, as usual. Why do I leave the house? Haven't seen the news today. Any cases of the flu here yet???
I just got back from Walmart and it was business as usual, couldnt see any sign of anything different to normal, the parking lot was just as full, the fast food places were open, people selling photography services and satellite TV packages as usual. About 5% of shoppers wearing masks, plenty of tourists there too. For sure the roads are a bit quieter as there's no school traffic but it's far from a ghost town. I actually know Les and his wife Sharon featured in the article, many others here do too. I wouldnt be surprised if he was selectively quoted - the press do that, I've been a victim of it myself more than once.
Hi Steve, Thanks for the reply. It is good that you guys are on the ground, and can intelligently discuss what is being written. Still no answer from authorities on the 5 (7?) suspect cases in QR...? Does it take this long to analyze. What are local papers saying?
Just as a note about what is going on with swine flu generally right now: -first death in US - a Mexican baby -WHO is considering raising the threat level to 5 (6 is maximum) -Flu spread is not slowing down -91 cases in US up from 60 -EU is looking at banning all flights to Mexico this Thursday. Argentina and Cuba have already done that. Looks like it is going to some lean times in Cancun regardless of flu showing up there or not. Event have overtaken everyone.
Here's a link to the interview I did last night with the BBC, listening to it again I'm cringing a little - especially about my inaccurate Mexican geography (Veracruz) http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/Up_All_Night/Wednesday/console You'll need Real Player to hear it and my part starts around 18 minutes in, the whole article is well worth listening to from the beginning.
