I feel for folks in Cancun whose livelihood depends on tourism (like 100% of all people in Cancun...).

All of Mexico is now more or less quarantined.

Hopefully this thing would resolve itself. The good thing is that we know with proper care, people don't die.

.. and yes, no cases in Cancun, but you know my stance on that, so no reason to debate that. As they say, if it walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck...

You obviously have no idea about Cancun the City. Have you even been there?

Who do you think the plumbers, electricians, telephone engineers, doctors, gas delivery drivers, swim school teachers, regular teachers, lawyers, construction companies, vets, supermarkets, car sales and maintenance staff cater too? jeeze I could go on forever... do you really think everyone in cancun is 100% reliant on tourists?

    Wake up!

I would not write about Cancun if I have not been there  You do not believe me (I know) but I LOVE that place.

There is nothing good or bad about being reliant on tourism. Every city/country in the world is reliant on something to survive, otherwise cities die.

I believe (and you can correct me, because I want to learn) there was nothing much there as far as City of Cancun before 1970 when construction of hotel zone started. So then the city was more or less "born". So the city is a child of the hotel industry, and its livelihood depends on the hotel industry and its workers and its tourists. All the trades that you mention are there because dollars from the hotel industry (people who work in the hotel business) are supporting the local businesses.

So the hotels have workers and taxi drivers who serve the hotels, and they need housing, and their kids need schools, and they go to supermarkets....

Nothing different from auto industry in Michigan... Many cities in Michigan survive solely on auto industry, no shame there.

    Both you Steves are correct.
Cancun is young, 1971 there were only about 2,000 here, now it is about 500,000.
To my friend Steve, yep the guys who rid bikes singing "Plomero, Electica, Zappoterio" are also being affected, poor guys, most of them are great people.
Back to Stevesteve, Yes the main reason it spread fast here is that insurance is rare and so is money for hospitilization so people just "Tough it out".
Report from IMSS today. Still no cases, ISSTE the same.
Steve the founder of this site, I went to Soriana and ALL employees were wearing masks. Not to mention schools are closed and so is Chichen Itza.
C'mon people lets not panic, Cancun and Playa are fine.

I’m trying to understand something: There is this poster, “stevesteve”, who doesn’t divulge his location but admits to not living in Cancun while representing himself as an expert on life here, who obviously has an agenda to promote his blog and the Google ads contained therein, said blog being for the most part is a cut and paste affair containing little original content, and who has a tentative grip on the English language. Yet we give him traction and exposure and take the time to play parry and thrust with his negative agenda. There are so many constructive and knowledgeable people who contribute to this board and share what they know from a local perspective. Why are we bothering with this troll?

That's a good question. I guess if I had to offer a reply from the US perspective it would be that of the "free country" persuasion. Along with his freedom to write what he wants we (and you) have the freedom to ignore him and not go to his google blog.

We will always have the glass half empty types and for the better balance of things they serve their purpose. I'm just glad I'm the glass half full type.

With that said I am very happy to see some encouraging posts overnight in the wake of the first death from Swine in the US.

The lowering of confirmed deaths in Mexico City and the fact that there still are no confirmed cases in Cancun are good signs. The plane in Baltimore turned out to be nothing but a couple of drunks (we probably know them!). Even though the media is over-hyping the situation at least everyone is well aware of the issue and this should help with the prevention of the illness spreading. Everyone now knows to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

Yes there have been vacationers from Cancun who have contracted Swine Flu but that doesn't mean they got it in Cancun.

Cancun has survived weak economies and devistating hurricanes, it will survive Swine. I think we are just hoping it survives without losing anyone.

As long as we are all cautious and make smart decisions I'm sure we will all be fine.

Just furthering the negative press that the Canadian media spews forth about Mexico on a regular basis.

It is one thing to disseminate information for the betterment of the masses. It's another to infuse negativity into a situation in order to promote panic and instability.

I just hope those affected get treatment, additional loss of life is avoided or at the least minimized, and Cancun and the other areas of Mexico negatively affected by this and all the negative press about the localized drug violence in border areas remain resilient and positive about the future.

    Hi mixz1,

I appreciate your comments. Earlier (a few days back, when the problem started) I referenced articles on my blog, and then site site admin said I should not do that, so I have not. Most everyone has a sig and that's all I have. It does not promote much, as most people coming here are regulars.

I have been to Cancun many times, and I live in North America. Blogging about the swine flu is more an analysis of current information, digesting it, and providing it in a condensed form to people who do not put in that kind of time into it. The 'on ground information' comes from steve, rivergirl, etc. but what I would write or they would write have their own value, since I approach it from tourist angle, and they approach it from locals angle. Different strokes.

Believe me, this has no monetary reward. Yes, people do come to find out about swine flu, but that is not much of a money word or anything like that. For cancun, FYI, money words are "cancun cruise" and stuff like that, not disaster (who pays for keywords related to that !!!).

So in the past few days, I have quoted from public sources. If that is a "troll" behavior, let it be.

Dear Steve, the site owner, if you feel I am a "troll" as well, please PM me, and I ma happy to take my comments elsewhere. Until I get that PM from steve, dear mixz I consider your comment a troll behavior.
